I just had my windshield replaced and noticed that one of my wipers goes all the way to edge slamming the plastic shield but that's not it. I removed a couple of covers and discovered that there's a really empty space between the grill and the turbine.. is this normal?

Are you talking about an opening on the passenger side with a plastic grille, and the blower fan is visible? Is this what you mean by turbine? If so, this is normal and you're not missing anything. That space will hold an optional cabin filter in addition to the one located inside the car. It seems to be used in markets with very high pollution and I've read that Chinese models include the filter. You won't need it in San Diego.

yes!! My B5 does have a filter right in the same spot that's why I was freaking out, and since I was about replace the cabin filter I was going to do that anyway.
