I have been looking into getting an s5 for awhile now and have come across one Im thinking about buying. Its an 08 with 125km or 77k miles for those of you using miles. Anyway my question is about the reliability of the car. Anyone out here with high mileage s5's let me know about your experience. Can I expect another 100 km out of the car without it being in the shop constantly? Let me know I really love these cars. I just want to know how other owners experiences are because people always tell me "audis are unreliable".

Ive bought 2 with higher mileage. Both needed control arms. My current needs engine mounts. My last needed clutch & cat. I sold my older one back to seller, too much to fix. It had 92k miles when i bought it, then drove it from Texas to WA state. My current had 72k when bought and nothing pressing needed repair. I have dropped a lot in mods thus far though.

I'm happy with mine, i too expected certain things to need attention after those kind of miles. Its really a gamble. I do highly recommend buyers inspection be done before purchase though.

Hey man! I actually purchased an 08 S5 with 78K miles and so far I've had to change the upper control arms, some bushings, clutch, clutch master cylinder, battery, and fuel injectors while doing the carbon clean. Got lucky and had the dealer replace the clutch and the clutch master cylinder; crazy domino effect... long story. I had the same issue that @Jeff V. talks about here.

If you change your clutch just make sure that they replace your release bearing AND release fork.
With all that being said, I love the car more than anything.

If you have a serious candidate, why not have a local independent Audi shop do a pre-purchase inspection (on your dime) so you know what you're getting into before the sale?

Keep in mind that this is the 4.2 V8 and not 3.0 supercharged. 2 extra cylinders with the fuel consumption to go along with it. I would hold out a little longer for a 2012+ if you can.

    Unless it's a cab, 2013+ is the 3.0 TFSI.

Love my S5. I have a 2009 currently at 108,000 miles. Bought with 64,000 and I've done the following.

    Replaced spark plugs.
Replaced fuel injectors and performed carbon cleaning.
Replaced intake flap vacuum solenoid (2008 has linkages and some early 2009 models do, too).
Replaced door sensors (not a necessity but I want use of the features I purchased).
Replaced RH door latch (door wouldn't unlock).
    Replaced battery.
Replaced clutch, flywheel, and entire transmission (most likely a rare case).

I've performed all the work on this car myself so I saved several thousands of dollars doing the DIY route.
With that being said I averaged paying $1,100 per month throughout the last two years of ownership (not including gas and insurance). This number does include mods (AWE track exhaust, p3cars gauge, snow wheels/tires and several other toys). I also paid off over half the loan during that time.

With all that being said I still have to change out control arms and bushings underneath the car. Might be doing brakes, too.

If you're still reading know that I wouldn't choose to have any other car. This thing is exactly what I thought it would be. An all-around car that is still as exciting to drive as the day I bought it. I will be running this car into the ground (if it could even think about breaking to a point beyond repair). I also require things to be working in 10/10 order so even the slightest squeak or tick will cause me anxiety until I can get the car fixed.
