To pull engine or engine and transmission?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been slowly tearing into my 2K A6 2.7t. I have a bad converter, turbos need to be rebuilt and so does the engine. I had initially planned on removing the engine since I could easily access the converter (with out removing the transmission) once the engine was removed. After removing everything that is shoe horned into this motor.........man what a tight fit!!! I"m asking myself if it would be easier to remove the transmission with the engine or not.

I currently have the top 4 bell housing bolts loosened, I removed the two forward facing Allen bolts on the bottom of the engine and I have the engine supported by a hoist. I have removed all 3 torque converter bolts, removed starter and alternator. I loosened the motor mounts just a tad. I"m just wondering if I should pull the transmission out with the engine or not?

How many bolts connect the transmission to the engine???

I can not disconnect the exhaust bolts because I can not remove the heat flanges and access the 4 bolts on the back side of each turbo. I removed all hardware that held the heat flanges in place, but I can't remove them due to clearance issues (go figure).

My plan was to lift the engine once it was disconnected from the bell housing and motor mounts. Then pull the engine forward enough to remove the two coolant lines ( I removed one already ) and then remove the exhaust heat flanges so I can then access the exhaust bolts for removal of the engine.

I"m not sure exactly where the other bell housing bolts are located, yet. The Bently is useless, I should have just purchased a Chilton and burned the extra 80 bucks :(

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated :)

Pull them togethor, leave downpipe's on, disconnect catback, disconnect main driveshaft, disconnect front axles, disconnect shifter, disconnect engine and trans mounts, engine harness disconnect at ECU, disconnect heater core hoses. Might be forgetting a few things, but definitely pull out togethor

Much easier to separate when they are both out of car. Have a helper to guide the combo out.

I am so close, Just ready to pull the engine.

How many bolts hold the transmission to the engine?

I removed the two Allen facing the transmission from the engine.

    I loosened 4 up top

See two more on the drivers side (one is an Allen with a bolt on the motor side )

& two that were on the starter which = 10.

If I"m this close, just gonna pull the engine.

So, how many bolts connect the transmission to the engine? I'm in there looking and I can not see any more than 10???

    Help please :)

    BTW, Thank You!

Do what ever you want man. Once you do it a few times you will pull it out either way no problem. But. I HATE pulling them together

So, how many bolts hold the transmission to the engine?

    Royal769sr,

I"m with you, however, the Bently has such limited information regarding such specific topics, such as bolt's needed to remove to separate engine from transmission. I found so much info in the Bently that says...not in this manual :( :( I purchased a Helm manual for a few of my previous cars and that manual was 100 bucks but covered every aspect for the car it was intended for. I was expecting a comparable manual for the 100 I spent on the Bently.

Needless to say, I just need to know how many attachment points there are for the trans to the engine. Looks like 10 here http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ich-goes-where , so if this is correct, engine will be out soon and on to a rebuild of my turbos and engine. I may pull the transmission and rebuild it too. I found a rebuild kit for a little over 500. I worked for Art Morrision when I was in High School where I learned how to rebuild engines and transmissions among doing suspension stuff and welding. I loved that job, just did not pay much then. Anyway, she will be rebuilt soon I hope :)

    Thanks for the help!

Off hand. 3in the middle bottom. 1 bottom right . 2 starter. 2 longer ones not same size in the right upper. Then I think 2 more at the top and 1 more to the left

Always easier to pull them both. Easier to remove. Much easier to re-install. Especially if you are working alone.

    Thank you guys!!!

What torque should be applied to the bolts? Bottom hex bolts, do they take a different torque? I've not checked the Bently yet, I doubt I'll find it as the transmission information has such limited info :(

    Thank you again!

Thanks, I did not see that. Sorry, I have been dealing with some wicked insomnia for the past 3 years and the past 4 months have been really hard on me. I"ve been reading through threads and the Bently and I'm sure I have mis-read our mis-understood a lot of info.

    Thanks for your patience.

And I really appreciate the help!!
