I'll be doing a quick R&R of my longblock in the following week and am wonder if I am missing any important seals/gaskets from this list.

Thrust bearings and an RTV style sealant for the oil pan (I used Elring Dirko). You'll also need an anaerobic sealant for the cam tray in the head.

Do you think I would need to replace the oil chain tensioner, or just get the chain? I'm trying to drop costs down as much as possible. I have a whole bunch of Reinzosil sealant from my last 1.8t build.

The oil pump tensioner is the same basic design as the one for the cam chain. If that one fails, what's to stop the oil pump tensioner?

You might want to consider the updated oil pickup tube aluthman references in his motor build thread.

Intake manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gasket timing chasing cover gasket. If you're going for power id look into the ie crank gear and arp crank gear bolt. Crush washers for the turbo lines.

Autodata also recommends replacing the bolts from the rod caps.
You guys recommend replacing those as well or just the main bearings caps bolts?

If reusing stock rods, replace the rods bolts as they are TTY. Most aftermarket rods have ARP bolts that are reuseable.

I was looking at these, however it seems a complete mission to replace. How hard is it? DIY anywhere?

You will need to remove the engine.

"drop in rods" require the same amount of work as building a engine. Not sure why they call them drop in rods anyway?

You don't technically HAVE to replace the main bearings, and some people have put the pistons back in with the old rings and been fine. That being said, you would be dumb not to do them if you had the chance.

Check the condition of the coolant flanges, I suggest replacing the back one after my experience. Replaced the o ring, but the flange itself was just old and wudnt seal. Just a suggestion as its in a sport that's insanely hard to replace.

technically you can do it with less work by pulling down the sub frame and dropping the oil pan and pump. no need to take off the head, just the spark plugs

How would you put the pistons back in without messing up the rings?

Seems like a big risk to take for little reward and given what was mentioned I don't know why one would take the chance.
