    Troubleshooting No Start Condition - 2006 A4 2.0t B7 automatic

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

    I just purchased a non-running 2006 A4 2.0t, automatic, 111k miles. Hopefully this wasn't a crazy stupid purchase!

I'm creating this thread to document my troubleshooting steps and to ask questions / look for advice in order to get this thing running again.

The story from the PO was that it died as his wife was pulling in to the driveway and has been unable to start the car since. This happened about a month ago so it has been down since then. He basically gave up on the car hence the sale.

This car has been fully maintained by the dealer. It's had a new turbo at 104k miles to the tune of $2300 and at the same time they performed TSB #2013147/13 - replaced intake cam, cam follower and hpfp due to worn out cam follower. At 108k, the timing belt tensioner failed, and that was replaced.

The car does turn over and will actually start for a few seconds if left alone for a day. The car will start, run for a few seconds then die as if running out of gas. Subsequent attempts to start will result in the car just cranking, rpm raises to about 300rpm but no start.

I really feel this is a fuel issue due to the fact that it does start up on first try which would mean I have spark.

Here is what I've done so far -

    • Have ODB2 reader... no codes!!!
    • Observed (heard) Fuel Pump priming when turning ignition to on
    • Check fuel pump fuse - OK
    • Remove fuel pump fuse and no fuel pump priming as expected
    • Replaced spark plugs
    • Replace fuel filter (it was old and dirty) still no start..

Dealer diagnoses was clogged fuel injectors per PO. I wonder if they got codes and reset them? Now, that the car doesn't run it isn't throwing any?

So, I guess I might embark on removing the intake, taking a look at the injectors and have them flow tested / cleaned, etc. I can also see what the carbon build up looks like and do a cleaning as well.

However, any advice whether this is the correct course of action based upon above observations? Could it be that the hpfp already failed? How can I tell if the hpfp is working correcdtly? I've unplugged it and that raises codes.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Easy there Mike,

Have you tried starting, and running the car with jumper cables attached?

    If yes, continue to fueling.

If no, please attach jumper cables and report back.

It sounds SO stupid, but you never want to rule something like this out.
    Best regards,
    Sean.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone
bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

I haven't tried exactly that but i'll give it a go!

Battery is new as of February 2016. It was drained when I took on the car. I have a trickle charger and let that charge it all the way up... But, perhaps jumper cables will provide more "juice".

If you start the car and give it gas will it stay started until you let off?

No, it dies no matter how much gas I give it. Is that a hint at something?

    Get a rosstech cable first
    Battery
    Starter
    Coil packs
    Spark plugs
    Low pressure fuel pump
    Fuel filter
    The fuel itself
    High pressure fuel pump

How much did you get that car for

I bought the car for $2500. Will see how good of a deal that was once I figure out the issue...

Thanks, yes, been seeing the need for a ross-tech cable VAG-COM. Looks pricey but sure it would be cheaper than replacing parts that aren't necessarily bad. I'll look in to getting one. (be willing to borrow for a fee too... anyone?)

    Battery is new.
Starter - seems fine cranks the car with plenty of power.
Coil Packs - have been replaced in the past. Will have to go through the receipts to see when and at what mileage.
Spark Plugs - new ones just installed
Low Pressure Fuel Pump - have not tested yet... on my short list of items to test.
Fuel Filter - Just replaced with new one.
Hpfp - Replaced 2 years and 7k miles ago.

thanks for your suggestions... it is appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look in to how to test it correctly. Looks like the oil filter housing has to be removed to replace it?

Yeah, 2L. This was per the Haynes manual... I'll look online for a better idea.

Here is a video I took while attempting to start -

Replaced the crank position sensor this evening but unfortunately no improvement to the issue.

I was hopeful, though. When the old sensor came out there was some debris blocking the little metal tip. Figured maybe that was causing some interference. Put in the new sensor but still no start.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. I suppose my next logical option is to get a ross-tech cable.

Unfortunately, no updates yet. It's still sitting in my garage. I haven't touched it since then.

Been shopping for a ross-tech cable as next steps but haven't pulled the trigger on one.

Bought a ross tech cable finally! Here is the dump of the auto-scan. Still learning how to use the software...

Only thing that stands out is the MAF fault... think this would cause a no-start?

Got the car started today on the first try. Had to keep it revved up... around 2k rpm +. Could tell it wanted to die but kept it going for 5 minutes -- until it was warm. Thought maybe it would hold an idle. Took my foot off the gas and it slowly sputtered out. Then would not restart on subsequent attempts.

Is this a clue to anything specific?

I've been playing with the vagcom but seems like every time I try something different I get different fault codes so not really sure what to make of them.

Does anyone have the proper fuel rail pressure numbers? What should I be seeing at startup?

You have a huge vacuum leak

I also noticed you have low b+ voltage which means your battery is bad or alternator isn't charging or that you've disconnected the battery recently. Clear the codes and try to start the car again to be sure which codes are actual recent failures

it sounds to me like massive carbon build up. last resort is take off the intake manifold not hard to do just patience and inspect for carbon build up. also while you are in there take off the injectors and inspect them. they are expensive as shit. so hope you have a big wallet.

Remove the low side fuel pressure hose above the intake manifold and put it into a bottle and crank it. See how much fuel comes out and the condition of it. Note a decent amount should come out quickly when cranking. Report back....

Start with what is easiest. Get your alternator and battery tested at a chain store. Costs nothing, you only have to remove 5 allen head bolts total and a 13mm nut holding the ground cable on the alternator + the serpentine belt using a 17mm wrench......and do as above ^^^^

You will need a 14mm and 17mm wrench to undo the fuel line.

Thanks. The battery is new from a few months ago. It's only low because of my attempting to start the car and it not running... :) Lots of cranking and no starting draining the battery. I have a handy jump starter / battery charger to keep the juices flowing. When the battery is charged it has no problems turning the car over.

Will do the fuel test... thanks for that! The low pressure fuel pump is suspect... I guess this will rule that in or out.

You don't have SAFE written on the instruments do you? It could have something to do with the immobaliser.
