Need a new turbo...can anyone help near Boston?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I am getting a p0299 code with a rattling sound while coasting and vibration at idle. From what I gather its the waste gate and dealer is telling me I would need a full turbo replacement. I am out of the extended warranty of course, and I already replaced the PCV and DV.
Anyone have a turbo for sale? And any good (and cheap) mechanic around Boston? I looked around the forum, seems like they go quick.
    Can't fathom shelling out $3000
    Thanks so much!

    **Update***

So I ended up getting a new one, she in the shop now, once I get it back I will write a review of the shop I used.
Meanwhile, looks like there are few options available, if anyone else is looking check out the recommendations below!

Have you checked eBay? There are usually a few stock turbos there for around $300

How do I check for wastegate play? I upgraded to APR Ko4 around May 2016. I still have my Ihi Ko3 for backup. Has around 48k miles.

Grab the wastegate rod and see if it has slop in it or if you can easily move it. Can also do the same for the wastegate itself. My stock turbo has no play in either and had 110,000 on it when I switched to k04

If needing a new turbo is it better to go with the K04 over stock? I currently have an APR stage I tune but may go stage two once my clutch needs replacing.

Well from what others have said, if you have the funds to go full ko4 with supporting mods, then it only makes sense to go the extra step. You are already spending decent money on a turbo.

Are they a relatively new shop? I have lived in, and around, Boston for a decade and never heard of them. I looked at their website and there was no mention of when the business started. Just wondering; not implying anything negative.

Not sure, first time using them. There were a bunch of Audis and VWs there. Seemed like nice guys. Offered free 1 hr diag to make sure what I needed and 10% off coupon online.

They are at $95/hr for labor. Only use OEM parts (Ill double check of course).

Anyways, I will let you guys know once I get it all done and have a better picture of these guys.

I used Brian's Garage in Needham for years, and highly recommend them. Rick (he is on AZ) at Auto Engineering in Lexington re-balanced my winter tires/wheels, and did a good job.

The New England section of AZ is the best place to ask Boston-area questions.

Yea I have heard all great things about them and thanks for the note about the New England section, forgot about that!

    I choose rayteam because
    a) it was closer to me
    b) gave me the best quote for a new oem turbo
    c) have free loaner cars plus 10% off promo right now
    d) good first impression on the phone, seem genuine (but lets see what happens)

Auto engineering and speedlife in Haverhill are the best IMO. Rick isn't cheap but you get what you pay for... He's very detailed

I just got a used turbo and the wastegate does have a little play. The rod does not. Is this normal? Would like to know before I install it.

So ends up it wasn't the turbo! Dealer was wrong. The guys at Rayteam did their own diagnoses and found that I had air and oil leaks. I needed a new cam shaft gasket and fuel sensor. Also the injectors (which I am going to Audi for the extended warranty replacement).

And the rattling I was hearing is a failed engine mount.

Picking the car up tomorrow so lets see how she runs.

Hopefully that was it and saving bunch of money not replacing the turbo

Well not sure. I got the injectors replaced and it felt a lot better yesterday. Dealer said everything but the engine mounts looked good...I am going to do the engine mounts this weekend myself. However, this morning on my way to work I got a CEL when I accelerated hard to get on the highway, so now I am worried again. I will have to check the codes when I get home
