well, like the title suggests this car has been a PITA since i bought it in June(2016). I'll try to abridge this as best i can. Before I bought the car I went to look at it and it was fresh from a trade in from the looks of things, the salesman didn't even know why it was listed online yet b/c it hasn't been gone through by them. Im like whatever let's take a look. We start it up and it sounds glorious then chimed a low coolant light and the CEL was on,ok so I pop the hood and the T next to the reservoir was broken leaking coolant and there was a slight miss so no test drive of course... I tell the guy get everything fixed and change the 02 sensors since the car had 78K and I would come back to check out the car. Two weeks later the car is ready and runs and drives strong so I bite at a reasonable price of 19,000. Car was bought new at that dealer and serviced there its whole life so the history was excellent. I drive the car 4 miles to my grandmother's house and it won't restart! Called the salesman and he comes out with the tech that worked on the car. The scanner says starter relay fault so they tow it back and have it fixed a few hours later. I picked up the car a few days later (lived 2hrs away) and drove it home. Everything was great for the next two days, in the process of moving to Birmingham, AL at the time. Drove the car for 565 miles to Birmingham and parked it, unloaded the moving truck, go to start the car and same thing no start. I called the dealer and they told me have it towed to the local dealer here in B'ham. They diagnose the car as having a bad starter and quote me $2600. After pleading with my original dealer they tell me that they can't help me with the fix the GM finally calls me back after I left a bad survey review and agreed to send me a $1300 check to split the cost, cool so take the car to a local German/ Euro specialist to have the work performed for less than Audi quoted. Duffy's Garage here in Birmingham began working on the car and during disassemble find a ground wire not hooked up and the car starts fine. They are able to start the car several times from jumping the starter but not from the key or push start inside. Duffy's sends the car to another local specialist for a second opinion, the other shop diagnose the the starter is bad and have it towed back to Duffy's (2 weeks). Brad, the owner says he believes there could be damage done to the wiring harness since the engine was dropped in order to change the 02 sensors by the previous dealer. I say go ahead and blow it apart and change the starter and if need be change the subharness which is available from audi for like $235. A few more weeks past and I don't hear any news, I call for an update and get told i'll get a call back when Brad is back. Finally spoke to Brad about the car and he suggest having audi fix it incase its not the starter they are responsible for it if it happens to be something else. I'm fine with that at this point but I ask how much I owe them for what they have in the car im figuring a couple hundred...they call me back and say its gonna be $930. Well at this point im gonna just have the car towed here and fix the car in my garage since now I basically lost $1000 for them to keep my car for 3 months and still didnt fix anything. Any info or ideas would be great..I have the bentley repair manual and have studied it for weeks about a possible starter replacement and found a used harness for $89 if need be.

Best of luck, I can't help since I don't have an S6 but atleast it sounds like the issues were found and narrowed down to the starter and possibly the wiring harness related to the starter.
It's obviously a hiccup, but I want to say once this is fixed you'll be posting about how the v10 is music to your ears.
I'll let another s6 owner chime in to help.

sad to hear no one has ever had a reliable s6 c6 on this forum. i would sell or trade it in and take that lost and move on before you it starts to become more of a money pit.

Its very unlikely that the harness is bad considering the dealership's repair manual has them disconnect the ECU and put the harness on top of the engine when removing the engine.

If you're going to keep the car, buy VCDS (VAGCOM) and post the error codes here. It can't be something really hard to fix, we just need to know what it says to help you.

These cars are awesome and will tell you exactly what is wrong with the right tools (VCDS). My bet is the start solenoid, which means you should just buy a new starter, but that's only speculation.

Im leaning towards starter/solenoid as well because i can hear a slight click from beneath the car. I'll get a vcds as well

I feel bad for unsuspecting S6 buyers who get drawn in when they see a sub $20k price. I've never owned one, but from the 7 years that I've been on this forum, I have seen so many people come through and tell us their story about how their C6 S6 is a money pit. If you aren't ready to set aside $500-$1k a month for repairs, then good luck to ya.

You only hear about the cars with issues, no-one comes to forums to tell all how great the car is.

to the OP: Trying get the starter done on the cheap with the indy was the mistake. I've seen tons of cars with multiple starter replacements, that starter was 6-9 years old.

Keep in mind, that starter is turning a V10, living in an oven.

True about the heat...This shop was one of my very good commercial accounts who specialize in Land Rover which are notorious for electrical gremlins but since I've been moved for a few years and now back maybe their quality of work has went down...I usually do all my own work, always have. I had just moved in to a new house so I figured get the car fixed to avoid the headache... the bastards even charged me $32 for coolant and the reservoir is bone dry .

Ight fair enough, just when I see a title like yours, I say to myself, "here we go again, another sucker was just born". Btw... How many C6.5 Avants do you see at any give car meet? Ever since I knew they existed, I've only seen one in my city. Now that's a rare car

Yeah my point exactly audi's are a rare sight at most meets....and jerk point made I had just moved so I didn't feel like dealing with a car issue that i had just purchased and thought the dealer was going to fix it for me since it was an ongoing existing issue.

I pray my starter doesn't go out on me, but I do expect it.

I am an enthusiast thru and thru, even professional German repair years, but if the starter goes I'm not doing it in my driveway. I will bite the bullet, get OEM Audi starter (with warranty).

Yes that does suck, but ALL cars have starter issues not S6 specific.

I feel really sorry for all the ppl who have Auto Start Stop features.....

Yeah, definitely I'll definitely get the oem starter. It's a Bosch unit that I can get directly from Bosch for $242.

Ok here's an update. I've checked all the wiring on top of engine bay everything looks as it should. I just pulled the belly pan off this evening and looked from beneath and checked the harness and inspected the grounds. Noticed this plug wasn't clicked in all the way. It's a single pin connector that appears to have been worked on b/c it was wrapped in electrical tape and had a butt connection... heres a pic of it pulled down from the main loom that runs along the front of the oil pan/fan assembly area...any ideas?

I reconnected it and the hoped on my bentley catalog to see if it mentioned unplugging this connection and to see what it was...came across some old TSB about hard starting issues that mentioned holding the brake with ignition on and putting the shifter in sport then back to park to relearn the ecu what gear the lever is in.... I turn the key over for shits and giggs. The starter turns over and the big bitch wakes up?!? I didn't let it run but a split second as there is no coolant or maf(s) hooked up. Figured i'd let you guys know where i stand right now. Is it the wire that wasn't hooked up? The relearn procedure? A combination?

Those connectors need a tool inserted to remove or uncouple them.

I cannot imagine a situation how it would unplug itself.

Is it possible this was disconnected to secure an expensive repair order. Glad you found it, and it would sound like the starter relay harness.

Thanks everyone. Everything seems to work fine...I haven't got a chance to road test it yet. Vcds codes were mainly low voltage codes for everything but it did show a starter circuit relay fault. I cleared all the faults and let it run for another 10 mins or so and none of the codes came back. I'll get it off the jackstands today and drive it to see if the traction control light goes out.
