    Alternator question ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I've been searching for a little as I'm running a 1000w mono block amp probibly pushing 500 to 700 watts rms. I have diming issues with cluster and stuff when bass really pushes at idle.

Seams there's not too much info describing alternator differences.
I would like to upgrade but I would like to know what I have first

    Here's a pic

    06B 903 016 c I believe is what it reads
It should be the 90amp correct? Or is that wrong not to sure what the 150 means.
If anyone has any references or list of part numbers for what amps would be appreciated
I see people talking about 90 is Normal 120amp is 2.7 and some have 140amp in 2.7t s4?

    Your alternator puts 150 A.

I think only golf, etc have 90A. Yours is 150A.

Maybe some low-line one in europe with minimal electronics have less

Consider installing a 1 farad electrolytic capacitor at the amp, connected in parallel with the power supply from the battery and chassis ground. This is a very large cap. It will charge up to battery voltage and discharge power into the amp when the amp pulls a lot of power. It will stay charged because the average power vs time is only pulling a high current a small fraction of the time. The rest of the time allows the cap to recharge.

I was looking into one of these but I see things saying they don't actually help? Not to positive on anything yet

You should already have this with that kind of audio setup. How many miles are on your alternator? if you put all of the accessories on is the problem worse?

Upgrade alternator. I am running 2200 watts rms running 250 amp alternator and 2 batteries. No caps, caps are garbage. Paid $450 for alternator and $150 to install. Charges perfectly.

A 1 farad cap will work for a lot less cost. Not as good as your setup, but it will stabilize the power supply to the amp by instantly sending power to the amp in during high current draw on the power supply circuit and that will help a lot.

Can you explain why? Without a reasonable explanation justifying and supporting your statement, it has questionable merit.

I agree. I had a 2 farad cap on a 1000W RMS system (2 300 watt amps for the 2 10" subs, 1 600 watt for the mains) and it did practically nothing. Maybe helped on the first hit, after that things got dim. I listen to rock/metal, so it's not like the bass was continuous. I also never really cranked it to it's full potential (or probably even half).

Big caps won't help with an undersized power cable from the battery.

Yep I run 2 runs of 1/0 copper from the alternator to distribution block. My amps love it.

No doubt, that is a lot of conductor. Can't have to much.

You have been making quite the assumptions lately. First you assume someone didn't have insurance, now you're assuming I don't know how to install a stereo. Wow!

Zero gauge enough for you? Or should i have gone with 0000?

"Are you actually asking that question.. Just don't even post on my thread. why do I need to lie on an Audi forum about me fucking two bitches at once. (not literally) yes i did, you are late to the party.
and this thread has ran out of gas. I just wanted to tell people about my experience I had 2 nights ago and felt like sharing it with my fellow B6'ers. And I thank the people who didn't hate."

If it's the original alternator then there's 120k on it I haven't changed it since I got the car.
Not to sure of the previous owner ever had to replace it.
And it's pretty bad at idle depending on how much it's turned up the dash lights will dim and dome light if it's on not just a little flicker either more like looks like it's going out lol, and the motor studders sometimes.

Where do you get alternators like that?
    If mines 150amp
I may upgrade the cable from alternator to starter and started to rain tray see if that helps.
    It's still the stock I think it's 4 gauge?
I'll probibly run it more direct tho. shorten the cable some maybe 1 gauge or 0 I have 00 cable from raintray to my battery in the trunk.

Check Mechman for your model and there is another place in Yucaipa I believe that sells them.

At this point, I am not assuming anything. No matter what I say, you take exception as if it is a personal attack on your integrity and knowledge. Apparently, you took offense at my earlier sincere apology as well. Where did I say I don't think you know how to install a stereo? You are accusing me af thinks that exist only in your argumentative imagination. In the post you are complaining about now, I was agreeing with you cable selection. Guys that behave like a cranky child are usually insecure. I won't be responding to your posts going forward.
