I recently bought my wife an '02 B6 sedan, VIN 8th E, with a Symphony cassette/CD. My wife just tried to use the CD player for the first time and found out it doesn't work. Error code 3, haven't looked that up. I can't tell for sure, but I think it's a 6-CD changer. What do I need to know going into replacing this? Compatibility, codes, etc? Thanks!

    All Over!

Are you referring to the single CD slot in the actual Symphony II unit? Or the 6-disk multi changer in the glove compartment?

There is a single slot in the in-dash unit. I don't have a changer in the glove compartment. I take it that's where it would be? In my Subies, the changer is built into the in-dash unit.

The error code 3 sounds familiar to the problem I had with my Symphony. Rather than try and fix it, i replaced it with an aftermarket head unit. Most any double DIN will work.

For the fit kit and harness adapter, don't bother with the Metra kits. They're garbage. I recommend the Enfig stereo kits.

You will lose the track and radio station info on the instrument cluster, however.

Did a bit of research on error code 3, and I think my next step is to clear a jam. Before getting into this, I should find out my security code. Apparently that's not on the sticker in the spare tire compartment; what is the current best way to get it without paying the dealer? Can I get it via VAG-COM?

Call Audi of America's support line. They should give it to you within 3 days. My code was in the stereo manual, though, so check there as well.

Having said all that you *should* be able to just disconnect it and reconnect it without needing the code. The only times I needed my code for my Symphony 2 or 2+ was when I would swap it to a different car.

Also, Nollywood, here in th US the base stereo was the Double Din Symphony 2 with the in dash 6-disc changer. We only had a glovebox CD changer with the RNS-E units.

No problem. I upgraded to a Symphony 2+ a few years back and the one I got in the mail had an error similar to what you have. I just popped the lid and discovered there was a full load of random CDs from the seller in there. During shipping one of them got dislodged and jammed the mechanism. I just stuck a pen through the center holes and jiggled them until they reseated on the trays and it worked just fine after that. Hopefully your issue is as simple as that.

Tools/keys acquired, unit disassembled, jam cleared, only to learn it's actually broken. The long skinny rubber-coated shaft that turns to load & eject discs has a plastic gear splined onto the end. That gear cracked and stripped, so the load/unload motor spins to no avail. My chances of fixing it successfully are insufficient to merit the time & effort, so it's off to car-part.com & eBay for me. I'll call AoA on Monday to get that ball rolling. Thanks for the info!
