    17 S3 S-Sport Seats vs Standard Seats

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
About to pull the trigger on a 17 and I'm stuck on whether or not to get the S Sport seat options for $1450.

    I'm a smaller frame guy, 145lbs...

    Are they worth it?
Do they provide additional lateral support?

The stitching looks great but I need more than that to justify the price.

The 17s now come with an all red leather option for the standard seats which makes it harder to justify the s sports for another 1450; unless of course they do offer additional support, etc.

To me, the super sport seats look great and feel great (smoother leather). However, they are manual and don't really provide more lateral support than the standard sport seats. The standard sport seats are electric and will probably be easier to maintain.

Hard to say whether it is worth the extra ~$1500. Depends on your priority.

Priority is for a supportive seat which can hold me through turns.

Audinaughty: so you're telling me I need to fatten up and the seats will support me fine?

thnx for the link... some good info about wear.

does one support better than the other?

Another thing is that if i have someone else driving the car, adjusting may become a pain in the ass..

The looks alone justified the purchase of my Sports Seats. The interior is already just plain for an Audi. The Sports seats really make the interior pop. I'm 6'0 185lbs. The seats provide good support for me.

You do need to be careful not apply all your weight on the seats wrong by putting all your weight on the sides of the seats when exiting or you could cause them to crease the leather since they are very stiff on the side supports to keep you in the seat. I could see someone overweight causing damage to the side supports on the sport seats since it would be difficult for someone 220 lbs+ getting out without placing weight there. I apply good leather conditioner to my seats monthly to prevent that. They still look new.

With my seats I adjust them once and done. Why would you be fiddling around with the seats over and over unless your sharing the car with someone, but it takes 2 seconds to readjust them. Powerseats = more crap to break and more weight. Nuff said. If you wanted 1000000 way power seats with a butt massager.... should of bought an S8.

If you want seats that will will hold you tighter get the Golf R. I have a 16 GTI with the same seats and they are very tight, I'm 6ft 195lbs and they make me feel fat! When I lean back I hear air escape because they are literally air tight. I'm shoping to upgrade to an S3 and S3 seats are a welcome relief, when the seats are too tight it traps heat and you get lots of back sweat. The sport seats are a must IMO (sport seats, B&O, dynamic FTW)

IIRC, the sport seat base is identical to the standard seats, albeit the leather is different. So really your paying extra money for diamond stitching and possibly wider shoulder supports with manual seat adjustment and some weight savings. Yes they look great! I wanted them too, but they aren't a "true" sport seat.

    I have a friend with a MK7 GTI and I prefer his seats over the S3 (for support). I'm 6' 185lbs.

When comparing the two seats on the configurator, the seats seem to be the exact same bottom and outer on the seatback. The additional shoulder support and stitching seem to be the only difference.

    Update

Went to the dealer today and sat in both seats back to back. I must say the s sport seats were noticeably stiffer and supportive than the std seats; especially in the upper torso region.

All the adjustability is there, just that it's manual. It has power lumbar as well as heat so all is not lost.

Although the red std seats on GW would be nice, S Sport seats it is for me.

Well.. as stated above both seat are not per say "track seats." You would need to go aftermarket for that. My decision was primarily visual candy... and I learned my lesson from previous cars.. swapping seats is a PITA due to airbags, seat position sensors,.... ect. Only easy to do on older cars.

The S sport seats may be a bit cooler in the summer, the diamond pattern should allow more air circulation in theory..

That is correct, and that is why I run a Sparco Evo 2 on the track. The swap is fairly easy (10min), after I have done it about 5 times and figured out the best sequence.. and you will get a code for the side bag and the position sensor. Nothing VCDS can't handle though.
However on the track the difference is significant. That is for the track... for a daily driver the getting in and out of the Sparco is quite a hassle. At least for the stiffer older folks like me ;)
