Car smoked now battery light is on

    Good afternoon all

I have a 2002 audi a4 3.0l with a 6 speed manual tranny. One day I started my car and major smoke started coming from my engine compartment. I smelt like burnt wires so I turned my engine off. Now my battery light is on and I know that isn't the issue because I just replaced my battery last month. If I unplug the battery while the car is running it ends up dying any thoughts I hope it isn't my alternator that went and just maybe the wiring harness connection needs to be replaced because I think maybe that is what smoked up. Any thoughts on what it could be. Also where can I find an engine diagram and parts list for free on the web? Every time I do a search I keep getting a4 1.8l diagram.

    Thank you

If it dies instantly with battery unhooked, its the alternator or could be bad wiring to it.

With the burnt electronics smell, I'd start looking at wiring too and from the alternator and the battery and see if anything is burnt. Make sure all the connectors are right as well.

Yeah as mentioned by leightonw before, if the car dies when you disconnect the battery, this means the alternator is not putting out any voltage/current. That is also why the battery light is ON. The alternator internal components have shorted and burned out.

The battery/alternator connection diagram for the 1.8T is the same as the 3.0l.
