    Front suspesnsion rattle!?

So ive had a rattle from the driver side for a while, which got progressively worse over time. Sounded like the struts were blown as i would hear it over small and large bumps in the road. So I got new front struts and also replaced the inner and outter tie rods on the driver side while i was at it as they have seem to have been prematurely worn. The test drive sounded ok, but then all of a sudden i heard the rattle from the passenger side now . Drove like that for a week till i had time to change out the passenger side out tie rod which was a bit in question when i did the struts. So changed it out yesterday and now the rattle seems to be on both sides and is even worse now! I checked 2 of the steering rack bolts, the one under the battery tray and the one on the driver side that is accessible from under the car, both were torqued pretty tight, not sure if im missing another bolt or where it can be located. But at this point im at wits end as to what could be causing this rattle. Any ideas or suggestions?

You have 8 ball joint ends and eight inner bushing on the control arms, 4 front sway link bushings, and inner and outer tie rod ends. That's a total of 24 joints just in the front. I had two separate noises recently. First was a rattling squeaky pitchy sound over bumps and it turned out to be the brake pad anti rattle clips. I had a couple spares which were easy to replace. You just snap them in with the caliper and pads assembled on the steering knuckle. Takes literally about 2 seconds, takes about 10 minutes if you do it with it disassembled. The second noise was a bad passenger front lower rear control arm. The inner bushing had separated from its housing. It made a honking sound and a rattle you could feel in the steering wheel.

I'm willing to bet you have a bad control arm. Have you shaken down all of the bushings and ball joints?

You gotta get in there, record the noise and upload it. Our suspension makes a lot of different noises when things go wrong because there's so many parts to it.

Loose brake pads will make a lot of noise and rattle over bumps. Makes enough noise to sound like the whole front suspension is making rattling noises. Try this: find a road where the rattling noise occurs then while driving lightly apply the brakes. If the noise stops with the brakes applied you just discovered the source of the rattling noise.

Good tip - I just tried this and ruled out the brakes as the source of my front end rattle.

Knowing it's not the brake pads is helpful for sure.
