The all elusive, all too common Rough Idle!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'll be quick to the punch as I understand this topic has been beat to death. For the record !!! I have researched till my eyes bled out! So please just humor me.

    2006 A4/B7 95k miles
All stock other than integrated stage one tune.
Rough idle in park/and neutral. Almost violent shaking. Fine otherwise. Good pull and torque at speeds.

This is everything that has been done previously to the problem starting and everything done after trying to fix the problem.

    Whole cam warranty job complete.
    Low pressure fuel pump
    Fuel filter
    Fuel regulator valve
    High pressure fuel pump module
    New om coils
Numerous types of spark plugs and gaps (trial and error) currently Bosch side fire platinum .
    New n80 valve
    New pvc/crankcase valve
Informally checked for vaccum leaks (can of carb cleaner sprayed at any possible vaccum line).

I currently am scanning a code of P0171 system bank 1 too lean..
However I have also been scanning numerous other codes. Here is the report....

Here are some screen snaps of the live action at idle...

So there you have it.... Anyone wanna take a stab at this one. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

P.s. I understand about the torque converter issue and am still reading up on that possibly being the culprit. However seems like that would have been a ongoing issue from the start...

I had rough idles too. Did a carbon cleaning and the vacuum (i forgot the exact part number) and it resolved most of the issue. I still need to do motor mounts which should take care of it fully. Your mileage may vary though!

As I sit here after 30 miles of freeway driving, pulled into a driveway, put in park, rpm at 1100... Wtf... Idle smooth however. I'm lost

Have you had fuel injectors cleaned at all - even by using an in tank additive

I pulled my hair out trying to figure mine out and I tried that and after half a tank it was fixed.

1100 rpm in idle is too high, however with the cvt you can bump the idle rpm up by 100rpm using vagcom, apparently this helps.

I would try this first as well - it is cheap and quick. Dirty injector can definitely throw lean code and misfiring.

I agree, try the intank fuel cleaner and then do a carbon cleaning, it may not be letting the valves close all the way giving a lean condition.

Your right at the mark to need a carbon cleaning

I regularly use the vw/Audi fuel treatment like every 4th tank. Also recently did a sea foam to tank and crank case. All turbo inter cooler boots tight without cracks.
Could the fuel canisters and paper filter by the fill spot (rear quarter panel ) cause any of this?

    Possible solution found!

While changing out copper plugs for Bosch side fire platinum, I noticed my plugs were easy to back out, as if I didn't torque them down all the way. Maybe a vac leak through the plugs??? Either way it's not having the rough idle ,,, as of yet.

After all these years talking about the 2.0T rough idles issue, is there common culprit? Some talked about transmission mounts, others dirty injectors, motor mounts, PCV etc... There's gotta be one issue that's causing this for 99% of us... What do you guys think?

My 08 idles rough too sometimes BTW

Now my idle is all over the place... High, low, normal, in park, in drive, a/c on a/c off, after coming to a stop.... I give up. Done everything except change out all injectors, carbon clean out and new turbo. Maybe the stage one tune is the issue... Whatever

I would really do the carbon cleaning. I did that and it resolved my random rough idle.

There is, carbon buildup, tsbs info all over the place about it. Honestly every rough idle I see is fixed with a cleaning, or plugs lol. And sometimes vacuum leak, often times though I read people tear their hair out looking for a vacuum leak then do a carbon cleaning months later and it fixes it. Especially if the car is anywhere near 100k or over

Sea foam and injector treatments are useless for carbon buildup, the cleaners do not reach where the carbon is building up. Seafoaming the intake is known to help alittle but not once you have a buildup issue, only helps to extend the amount of time between physical cleanings

Honestly the fuel filter could be but probably not without a code, I would change it because it's cheap though

    Well No bueno dudes....

Cracked turbo on exhaust side. Im done with the tune and going stock. Shop wants 2400 to install new turbo. That includes smoke test and diagnostic charges. Any one direct me to DIY with pics. Also where can I pick up my own for $1000 or less?
