    2013 S5 VAG-COM Parking Brake Reset Issue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Got new pads / rotors on front then moved to back, with expectation that I'd be able to retract the parking brake without issue since I have a Ross-Tech VAG-COM cable and software. But, like any other piece of software in existence, the documentation apparently hasn't kept pace with the version releases.

I have Vsn 16.8.1:53, and ran the firmware update that Ross-Tech suggests (actually, it seemed I wouldn't be able to use it without updating).

Following the instructions to open parking brake the steps are

    SELECT
    53-Parking Brake
    Basic Settings 04 - enter Group 007

When I choose Basic Settings 04, instead of a screen that allows me to enter the Group code and initiate action, I get a pull-down screen that lists the following:

    EEPROM RESET
    END LINING CHANGE MODE
    EOL RESET
    FORCE AUTO ADJUST
    MAXIMUM BRAKE TEMPERATURE RESET DEVELOPMENT
    RESET ACTIVATION COUNTER LEFT BRAKE
    RESET ACTIVATION COUNTER RIGHT BRAKE
    RESET HIGHEST BRAKE TEMPERATURE REACHED
    START LINING CHANGE MODE
    START OF OPERATIONS

Based on the selections, 'start lining change mode' seemed like a reasonable choice. Choosing that presents a 'GO' button at the left and a blank box about 30 characters wide seemingly awaiting an entry. But there is no opportunity to enter text nor numeric information.

I tried 'Start of operations' as well, thinking maybe I needed to tell the controller it was going to receive a command. Same results.

Thanks in advance for any guidance re how to get the parking brake retracted.

Did you try selecting "GO" in Start Lining Change?

Nope - didn't think of that.

The empty field to the right implied some sort of entry. But maybe that's why there is no ability to enter anything. Odd that the field is presented though vs. simply the 'Go' button. I'll give that a try in the morning.

The correct answer is to select 'Start lining change mode' and press the 'Go' button that appears on the subsequent page, but only after cycling the parking brake on and off a few times in advance. If the cycling isn't done, an error message will appear.

Turns out the blank field to the right of the "Go' button is a message field, which gives status of operation while in process. So that explains why it wouldn't accept text or numeric input.

The on line demo on the Ross-Tech site shows the process for prior generation cars and also current models, however it is two presentations with the current generation demo being the second one. If there was an explanation or any info pointing this out on the Ross-Tech site, I missed it, which caused me to dismiss the demo as not being current since I was watching the one for prior generation machines.

Ross-Tech phone support was quick with the answer, although I was on hold for close to 5 minutes even though I was the first caller in the queue.
