    DIY mini-hood scoop

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay, so from the outset, I know some of you will hate this and other like it, so please unless you have something constructive to say, don't bother.

I have always like hood scoops, don't know why. Decided to add a GC8 ram scoop to my hood ages ago and while I have the car off the road (various projects happening - K04, grille mod, big brake kit), I decided to go for it.

First off I made a template and made sure it fit the scoop.

    This is the scoop:

    This is the template:

This is the cutout on the bonnet prior to actually cutting:

This is the hole in the hood, Im committed now ;) (mounting tabs bent down):

I will be wrapping my hood in vinyl but I wanted to keep it clean as possible, fits really good, Ill update with pics when Im finished.

Interesting. Would love to see what the final results are!

If you put in unequal length headers, maybe you'll get that boxer sound

I've been thinking of doing a fibreglass dual gauge pod for the hood. I want mechanical oil and fuel pressure but I don't want those liquids in the cabin. I think a custom made glass unit might be the best solution. Mold it and paint to to match. Might be ok might be the most hidious thing known to man. But worth a shot.

Looking to see how this finalizes. Seems like your on your way to a 1 off mod. Keep up the work post pics as the project continues.

This is going on the left side of the hood I'm guessing for some added airflow? What color are you gonna end up wrapping it? I would love to do this to mine but with a silver car its hard to choose mods/colors that don't just look like they are just thrown onto it.

I definitely think itll look good with the scoop on it, I wonder if it will make a difference on intake temperature?

Thanks mate, those aren't legal here. There are restrictions on what you can do due to pedestrian safety :) Thus my use of a legal hood scoop.

Is this your track car? If it were my car I'd just buy a CF hood and modify that one to your liking and keep the stock one in storage.....

No, just my daily mate. Im not too worried, its a common part the bonnets, plus the CF one is very expensive.

Well thats good, wondering how it will turn out. It's good you opted for the covered hood scoop for when it rains.

yeah, it sends air to the fender side meaning water cannot directly fire at the pod.

Ok, so successfully installed, looks great. Just need to let the silicone seal dry and wrap the hood and modify the hood heat-shielding.

I do not personally prefer it but it probably won't look bad when its all the same color. Are you going to be using it for air intake? If so you may want to put a media filter somewhere to block water, I do not think it would suck up enough to make it a problem but wouldn't be a risk id take when a few bucks could avoid it. Let us see it when wrapped though :D

    op scoop?

I don't mind of hood scoop, if it's necessary (ie track) and functional.

If I had to install one ( I won't , because DD), I would do an ansys analyst , and probably go with air extraction type : Louvers on one side only.
something like this, but on turbo side :

    this is actually a B7 :

    or go subaru :

op, do you have a picture of the whole car? it doesnt look that bad.

Yes, delta 20oC at 26oC ambient prior.

What do you mean by channelled? The original car it come from it isn't channelled and the air will to directly where it is needed.

What you guys must remember is that all of the other options are thousands of dollars to buy a cf hood, or get it professionally installed and painted.

I am going to wrap the hood in gloss black vinyl and I think it will look really good and a bit different.

props for having the balls to cut up your hood. I did something similar way back in the day, though with different louvers. pics from farther away? It's tough to get a good idea how it all plays together. It looks a little odd all by itself. Also, I looked at your grill thread... make sure that gets a little more love before throwing it on the car.
