Has anybody found an elegant solution to getting rid of this? Just wire brush it? Paint afterwards? The rust coming through is driving me crazy.

Wire brush then paint it. When i replaced my rotors i bought ones that were already painted, no rust issues here.

Move out of Michigan and come to SoCal. Mine look great .

I agree with Elscotto. When you replace your rotors, buy ones that are already painted/coated.

California, that sounds like a simple yet expensive solution. :)

On rusted areas that I can't or don't want to bother removing the rust, I use rust converter to convert the rust to a paintable surface. Then I apply the paint. This works best on surfaces that are OK to leave with a textured or rough surface. I used this approach with my rusty calipers and hubs before painting with silver caliper paint. I also used it on the underbody frame sections that are rusting badly and then coated with underbody spray.
