    Moving to California

Hey guys, I've done some searching and I cant seem to find anything. Unless I'm dumb, which I'm sure someone will point out I am. But anywho, I'm moving from Colorado to California here in a couple weeks. I've got a 2010 A4 with the Stg 1 APR tune. What do I need to know about emissions and such for the state to pass, and what can be done to the car to keep it (semi) legal to drive when I start putting more money into the car.

they do sniffer checks and full computer checks. if you don't have a tune deleting rear o2 you'll be ok, but no test pipes and a hfc is very iffy. if they see it you'll fail

So if I rock a HFC, just keep the stock cat and go through the pain to switch them for testing? Does the computer check see the tune and fail?

There computers only check for fault codes, not software modifications. I had a B7 A4 with stage one for years and no issues passing smog.

Might as well keep the stock cat on running the stg1 file....

Pretty sure they got rid of the sniffer test here in CA, I just had a smog done a couple months ago.

according to their website they did not get rid of it. and as for a tune, some tunes simply stop a readiness check from happening so there is no cel some make the sensor disappear so it can't be checked but readiness is still checked. the latter tune should be ok the first is not as you must have readiness set to pass

No more sniff test in CA.

They hook up to the ODB system to check for emissions system readiness and functionality, along with fault codes.
The technician follows that up with a visual inspection for aftermarket equipment and CARB certification.

Keep it stage 1 and you should be fine. W wouldn't do a test pipe or HFC unless you are willing to switch them out prior to your test. Or just go buy a B9 and forget about smog for the next 5 years

From experiences I have heard, stage 1 with a HFC is the same power as Stage 2 with HFC. Stage 2 files just clear the O2. A few guys have been told this by APR shops, and GIAC could not find more power to be had with additional tuning after adding an HFC.

Definite gains running a hfc and st2.. especially with e85...
But yes... No worries of cel's thanks to secondary deletes...

You can always look around for shop that can be bribed. I've done that when I need to smog my G coupe with custom exhaust. You will pay almost double what the regular price would be. They are out there.

I mean, I'd like to be semi legit lol.

With the HFC though I'm trying to get Stage2, and soon I'm going big turbo so I'm trying to see what the hell I'm going to have to do. Because in Colorado, they don't care as long as you're not loud.

I'm stage 2 with a HFC. Luckly, cops think you are a 50+ year old man or a rich 18 year old girl and don't hassle you.

Amazing how many responders here who don't live in CA (and likely have never been here) seem to know everything about our smog requirements
    1. AFAIK, there is no longer a "sniffer test" here (have had my B6 and B8 tested w/i last 2 years, no sniffer test).
    2. There are differing requirements re smog certification - urban areas, LA/San Diego Coastal corridor, entire San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento area, and some Central Valley cities (Modesto, Fresno) have far stricter requirements than rural areas.
    3. CA law requires that you register your car brought here from another state w/i 30 days, although most folks wait 6 months or longer - then you'll need a smog cert.
    4. Re the poster recommending bribing a test shop, yeah Let's Make America Great Again, as long as I can do whatever I want

I'm in The Bay Area and it really just comes down to word of mouth and finding a mom n pop outfit, checking on Yelp reviews, etc. no 2 shops are exactly the same when it comes to testing so best to snoop around.
