Although I like several aspects of the 2nd gen, I still wildly prefer the overall aesthetics of the the 1st gen. Am I alone here?

Nope, completely agree, 1st gen is a classic, and I just bought one!

I like the first gen better, just like the TT audi has lost thier way.

Completely agree, 1st gen all the way, and I just bought a 2010 V10 in white with carbon blades. The new gen. has lost its sultry curves and proportions, it has become much more angular and elongated, essentially a lambo with an Audi badge. The deletion of the side blades was a big mistake, and the front grille is muscular but not flattering. The back is too square and flat, the front too pronounced, and the side is too long. But then I think the entire 2017 Audi lineup, especially the new A/S/RS5, has lost its curves and proportions and traded away their elegance.
