Carbon Cleaning - Cost ?

Hi all,

I'm about to get a carbon cleaning performed at a shop for my car which currently has 65K. I have few questions:

1- Does the fuel injection throttle Body Mounting Gasket need to be replaced?
2- How much does this job usually run for?

I had it done on my previous car - '08 RS4. It was a big job and I didn't do it at Audi dealer. I opted for a great mechanic in SF. He is the only one I take my car to. The carbon cleanup on a V8 was about $1200.

I assume that on a 4 cylinder it should be significantly less unless there is a lot of build-up.

Don't know about your 1st q.

ive received quotes from 600-1k for a carbon cleaning for the b8 a4. the more expensive ones did walnut shell blasting in addition to the chemicals and scraping...

My local Audi dealer offer (non- walnut shell blasting) carbon cleanup for $300Cdn. Is it still a useful step? Or should I just go for walnut blast? My A4 is 95000km now and didn't feel anything wrong at this moment.

Sorry your post got a little derailed, Just drooling a bit. As far as the carbon cleanup I have been quoted from 500-1100. I don't know for sure if the gasket needs replacing but I think it is relatively inexpensive to do since you are in there its a good piece of mind.

For that cost (especially at a dealer) Im pretty sure its not a true carbon cleaning. (Theyre prob using some BG cleaning nonsense). So def not worth it. It kinda depends on how you drive - for a real carbon cleaning. If you drive a lot of highway Id say youre fine. If you drive a ton of stop and go and idling you might want to consider it.

I just know it is not walnut blasting but no idea what method they going to do. I should consider find another shop for carbon cleaning then.

How do you guys know whether they really did the carbon cleaning? Do they let you stand next to the guy who is the doing the cleaning? Or is there a pic of before and after? I don't think you will notice the difference by driving the car after the cleaning.
