Dilemma - Keep or Sell before the B9 S4 arrives?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I currently have a 2015 S4 lease with 18k miles - Nardo Gray, Black Optics, Prem + with Tech Package, S-Tronic, & Adaptive suspension. It is an awesome car, but for the past 7 months I have only driven the car a few dozen miles each week living and working in Santa Monica.

I am trying to decide if I should keep the S4 through the end of the lease, or sell it now before the B9 S4's arrive early next year. I am also considering replacing it with a B9 allroad when they arrive shortly.

My question - how much of a hit with the B8.5 market take when the B9s arrive?

How much of a hit is hard to predict. I'd say at least 10-20%. There will be guys that will claim that the lack of MT etc will preserve B8.5 values but I doubt that's true. The vast majority of buyers will know simply that there is a new car available with improved interior/tech and more power. B8's will become tuner cars for the EVO/WRX crowd as the prices fall.

It should be easy for you to determine how much if any equity you have at present. In the end, if you're just not driving the car much and are interested in something different, any equity in your lease would be a good enough reason to relieve yourself of the payment until you find something you enjoy to replace it. If I didn't need my car and it was about to be replaced by a better model, I'd explore getting out of it.

Saw a B9 allroad yesterday at my local dealer, looked real nice! Also drove a B9 A4 was surprised how fast it was. Can't imagine what the new s4 will be like.

Keep in mind that it will be a brand new gen, so if you buy it the first year it comes out, expect some PITA issues.

    ^This!

Plus, your car is a lease, so why bother trying to get out of it early or worrying about depreciation? Am I missing something with leases?

    ^^ This

And what's the rush?? You are in a lease, ending early will cost you. Why not ride the lease out then get something else when the time comes.
The new S4's won't have a SD, won't have MT, won't have dual clutch... I'm not sure it will be "better". If you want a B9 Allroad I think you can make that move now that Audi may buy you out of your lease early if that's the case (just speculation). Lastly - won't we see B9 S4's LATE next year vs early?

Off topic but I'm in a 2017 a4 loaner and I've noticed the engine shuts off when stopped and fires up mildly shaking the car everytime you lift off the brake. Would drive me insane if the b9 s4 had this engine shut off feature. Does it? The interior exponentially better than my b8.5 but the digital tach is not to appealing.

Just a guess: Auto start/stop is likely an Al-Gore-required feature, but disabled in "sport/dynamic" mode.

ha ha that's good to know, hopefully it is disabled in dynamic mode because it was horrendous going through the chick fil a drive thru line this a.m. . . . okay i'm exaggerating a bit but man that'd drive me crazy.

I'm pretty sure you can turn it off.
I found the interior a step back from the B8. Less of a "cockpit/driver focused" feel... more of an "Accord" feel.

I had a A6 TDI Avant rental 2 weeks ago with this feature and I noticed when I didn't press down all the way, the car would stay on.
I am not sure if it was just this model that took into consideration about the amount of pressure on the brake, but might be worth a shot.

To the OP, it sounds like you are asking if you will have more equity prior to the B9 being released, which I think you will since you currently have the latest body style.
The common buyer sees it this way, while enthusiasts or people with some car knowledge will know to wait at least a year to get the bugs out.
I wouldn't recommend turning it in early, but a private sale could fetch more money about 6 months before the release. With that color, I don't think you will take as big of a hit as people with common colors.

The A6 loaner that I've had in the past with start/stop had a button on the dash you could use to disable the feature. I imagine that option will still be there on the B9, even if buried somewhere in the MMI screens.

Thank you all for the feedback - I am working based on the assumption I can get out of the lease now without a penalty - my payoff is close to the current market value ($47-48). If I can get out now, or sometime before the end of the year I probably will. I just don't want my equity position to vanish when the new S4's arrive early next year and then I am upside down until the lease ends in a year...

I will plan to list the car for sale and see how much of a premium I can get over the payoff before the end of the year. Hoping the Nardo Gray helps the value :)

Unless you have a 6MT and they don't offer that anymore, then you car keeps a certain value..

They are supposed to be still offering a 6MT, at least on the A4 not sure about the S4.

This is probably a topic on it's own, but I would never leave the start/stop feature turned on and yes, it would annoy me. Whatever tiny gas savings there are may be lost on engine, starter and battery wear and tear.

it certainly didn't feel healthy every time i'd inch forward in the drive thru and it would fire up. I would have at least thought if manufactures were going to be forced down that road, they would have got the vibrations totally worked out so the start / stop is seamless but nope and than of course as you mentioned all the other components to get it fired up. Nice car though.

The review at car & driver for 2018 s4 was not Great. " throttle response not as immediate as older car, vibration felt at steering column and floor, idle did not sound great". The car may have been early production and all the kinks may not have been worked out.Very happy with my 1015,s4. B9 so far does not impress with it's tacked on screen and video game dash.
