If you are talking about an A6 with a 3.0 motor currently, Shouldn't be too big of an issue. If you are talking an A6 with 3.2 or 4.2 then not so much.

I would think it's not a straight plug and play issue but is should be doable, the engine is pretty much the same, the issue would be engine management and wiring, probably need the ECU from a facelifted A6 or whatever car the donor engine is coming from. I've dreamed about doing it but it would not be a cheap project.

It's doable like Dutch stated but you will need the wiring harness from the 3.0 and also a few components which I'm putting up for sale.

I've been searching for the answer myself with very little info found on the internet. I have a 2010 Audi A6 3.0 supercharged avant with a cracked block. I'm finding plenty of used engines with 90k-120k miles on them for approx $3500. I keep wondering if I could swap in an engine from a newer Audi A6 3.0 with lower miles. I know there were some updates to the engine but were they just tune changes and all the mechanicals stayed the same. It would be nice if I could just purchase a newer engine and plug in my existing harnesses and ECU and call it a day. Does anyone know for sure what's different? On the flip side, if there were some changes to the existing hardware...would it be possible to install the old hardware on the newer longblock to make it compatible with the car? Sorry to jump on your thread but I'm not allowed to start my own thread yet.

How did you crack your block and how many miles when it was cracked

I'm pretty sure it was caused by water. I was driving home during a very heavy rain storm. I came across a road that ended up being quite deep. When I got home 10 minutes later I smelled coolant. I couldn't pinpoint the leak and finally sent it to the shop. They pressurized the system and finally found the hairline crack in the block. Prior to the rain storm I never smelled coolant. Car has 120K miles.

Everything on the car is stock. I think it was just the temparature change that caused the crack...as far as I know it wasn't from the intake taking a big gulp of water. That would cause a hydralock condition which would probably bend a rod. The engine runs fine and I didn't notice the engine running differently while I ran through the water or afterwards

Aren't the blocks on these cast aluminum? Barring any internal damage or other distortion, why not just weld it up?
