    Lava Gray RS4 Introduction!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello - I am very excited to finally be a part of the RS4 community - you guys are great!

I did a pseudo-intro on my shipping inquiry thread but I want to get a separate one up here where I can share photos of my RS and ask a few more specific questions I have not been able to resolve through search.

Be forewarned - I am not very good at keeping things short and sweet...

I always lusted after these cars - the wide fenders, amazing performance, incredible sound… I drove two local examples back in 2013 before I leased my last vehicle (BMW X5 50i MSport) but neither one was in decent shape and at the time, getting a vehicle with no warranty was WAY outside my comfort zone having done leases (Owner’s Choice here in Chicago) on my last five vehicles so I moved on and thought I may revisit things if Audi ever brought another RS4 or the RS3 stateside.

Getting down to the wire over the last month and a half, I needed to make the call on my next set of wheels, however, I was having a lot of difficulty making a decision. I have a kiddo who loves looking out the window so a coupe was out of the question. Throughout the past year I have jumped back and forth considering everything from another X5, 650GC, M5, M3, S6, S4 to a Golf R just to name a few. I have a whole spreadsheet and managed to drive my wife nuts flip-flopping back and forth thinking my mind was made up multiple times!

While I had narrowed it down to about seven very nice options, none of them seemed to tick all the boxes for me. The thought of an RS4 popped back to mind and the hunt was on! I had two local cars sell the day before I called on them - drove two other local ones over the following weeks that were in disappointing shape - paint work on one and rust + destroyed interior on the other.

I never thought I would consider something without getting seat time but I expanded my search across the country. Thought the search was over when a friend drove an hour out of his way to check out a low mile Mugello example in California for me but that one did not end up working out. Neither did a black one in Utah, black one in Maine or a silver in Colorado - the search continued.

The majority of the time I was limiting results to under 60k miles. I also really wanted bone stock - preferably not even tinted. As you all know there are very few examples with those two criteria and they demand a premium. Still battling my apprehension of a vehicle out of warranty (not to mention a high-end, high-performance one!), I began to convince myself the best route may be to look for a decent high mile example that hopefully had some of the more expensive service items taken care of throughout it’s lifetime. I could save a fair amount over the lower mile examples and not be in totally over my head if this whole used car endeavor did not turn out how I envisioned.

Fast forward through a handful of other highs and lows thinking I had found a good one only to uncover a deal-breaker flaw.

Did I mention I am very particular?

Okay let me wrap this up already! After all the search alerts, phone calls and emails, one popped up in Tennessee that caught my attention. The pics looked decent and the price was right. I was particularly enticed by one of the listing photos showcasing a folder of service records and the description noting it was only a two owner car. With ~93k I was amazed at how good it looked in the pictures. I rang the dealer and after a few quick questions, immediately put down a deposit.

Following a full independent PPI including compression test where everything came back above board - including confirmation of no weird smells and a handful of other obnoxious questions - I pulled the trigger!

At the time I was really unaware of the rarity of Lava Gray. If the registry is accurate, there are evidently only four in the country. Pretty neat little bonus on an already rare car. It is a fantastic color in person - changes in different light.

Aside from a few imperfections one should expect on a nearly 10 yo car with close to 100k, it was very well cared for. The service records are great and include a recent carbon cleaning as well as confirmation of DRC replacement following the recall. It is totally stock except for a few tasteful tweaks including an OEM flat bottom TTRS wheel with RS4 badge, hardwiring for V1 with a display very cleanly mounted in the center cluster and nice bright white bulbs in the fog lights.

Sorry, no mods planned. I am a big OEM purest. The wheels have been refinished in a couple spots. I will see how they look come springtime and may consider a new set of OEMs, keeping the current ones exclusively for winter. It is plenty fast for my needs so performance upgrades are not a consideration. At some point I may consider blacking out the window trim as Gansel did with a wrap for the titanium package look but I prefer the bright silver mirrors and wheels.

A full detail as well as service including plugs is on deck. It has brand new all seasons but I will likely get dedicated winters.

Although it came with great service records from the previous two owners, the actual owner’s manual was not with the car. I have searched for a PDF copy online and/or somewhere to purchase a hard copy with no luck locating one. Anyone have any info on where to find a copy? Audi states they are out of stock but will restock. Do they actually restock manuals from 2007?

In light of my lack of the manual I have a few configuration questions I hope someone may be able to help with as well as a few other additional general questions.

-At startup the top states ‘OK’ in green but then ‘Service!’ below. Oil change records do not indicate it’s due and cycling through the ‘Check’ menu does not produce any results. Is that telling me everything is OK or service is needed? At the PPI there were no codes less than 200 miles ago.

-Should the passenger side mirror tilt down when in reverse if the mirror adjustment knob is on driver’s position?

-It is equipped with Bluetooth but the default 1234 passcode is not working and neither is 0000, 1111, 5555 or 9999 - what am I missing?

-The driver’s seat belt retracts very slowly - is the tensioner accessible/able to be tightened up via DIY or need to be replaced by a pro?

-The center arm rest is intact but pretty creaky and bugging the crap out of me! I see ECS has all the parts but they are quite pricy. Anyone do a full replacement with a brand new one - is it rock solid, no creaks?

-I have only had it a week but noticed significantly more brake dust on rears - is that common or a sign of needing to replace the rear pads? Rear pads were 5mm at the PPI and I can feel a lip on the rotors so I know they will need to be replaced at some point.

-It has been years since I daily drove a manual. (Loving it btw!) At complete stop, zero throttle, it does not always want to go into first. If I keep the clutch depressed and put it in second then immediately back to first it goes right in. Normal?

    Any info is much appreciated!

I will be out at Collector’s Car Garage for the last Rise & Drive of the season on Oct 2 as well as the Audi Exchange + Audi Car Club Chicagoland car show on Oct 9. I hope to meet some other local RS4 owners - come out to these events guys!

Lastly, coming from years of Bimmerpost which is a great, very active community, I have to thank Audizine for the nice smooth iOS experience. It definitely increases my participation having easy access to the forum through a well designed app.

Here are a couple quick pics. I will be sure to add some more here as well as on Insta - moabiite

Welcome to the community moabite. To many miles! :)

-At startup the top states ‘OK’ in green but then ‘Service!’ below. Oil change records do not indicate it’s due and cycling through the ‘Check’ menu does not produce any results.
If you press this button on your dash, how many days or miles to service does it show? If it doesn't display a number value then your service interval is due.

Should the passenger side mirror tilt down when in reverse if the mirror adjustment knob is on driver’s position?
    It's not a BMW :)

The driver’s seat belt retracts very slowly - is the tensioner accessible/able to be tightened up via DIY or need to be replaced by a pro?
It's an older car by now and the seat belt fabric gets dirty so it doesn't slide nicely anymore. Easiest way to solve this is to use silicon-grease in a spray can (furniture polish) - it doesn't leave stains on the clothing or seat. Spray the belt and let it retract a couple of times. You cannot do anything on the tensioner as it is a closed unit and in case of an accident it will pull you and secure you in the seat.

The center arm rest is intact but pretty creaky and bugging the crap out of me! I see ECS has all the parts but they are quite pricy. Anyone do a full replacement with a brand new one - is it rock solid, no creaks?
This and the passenger side glove-box are both standard wear and tare items in all A4/S4/RS4 b7 models in the cabin compartment. Hence the reason why they are expensive. A new one should be rock solid but first check if it's not just something inside the armrest vibrating and dangling around.

I have only had it a week but noticed significantly more brake dust on rears - is that common or a sign of needing to replace the rear pads?
Could be that the fronts were replaced (they ware faster - brake bias is 70/30 front/rear) and the rears are still the original Pagid pads - these tend to produce a lot of dust. Check a couple of the brake related threads and you'll find what you're searching for as here in this comunity you have all types of enthusiasts. Some prefer low-noise low-dust pads and others just want those that bite the most and can handle the highest race-track temperatures.

At complete stop, zero throttle, it does not always want to go into first. If I keep the clutch depressed and put it in second then immediately back to first it goes right in. Normal?
Do you depress the clutch completely?
Could be a worn synchro for 1st/2nd gear but normally the side of the synchro when going into 2nd is used from heavy launches. If you put the car into second and floor it, does it jump out of gear?
Could also be the clutch slave cylinder acting up or an air bubble in the fluid line, but in both these situations your problem should occur in any gear, not just 1st gear specific. Since you just bought the car you have nothing to loose by a complete fluid flush job and you'll see if the problem still persists.

What I did when I bought the car (what I always do when I buy any car):
    - motor oil change
    - transmission & differential oil change
    - brake fluid change (the brake fluid is also used for the clutch so when doing a brake flush also flush the clutch - the clutch breather valve is on the driver side above the axle on top of the transmission)

ps: post some more pictures of that color, it looks amazing!
Jeremy Clarkson: "So when you were saying that it won’t slide, what you meant was, ‘I can’t slide it.’“
    James May: "Yes."

    Lava Gray RS4 Introduction!

Thanks much for taking the time to answer all my questions ven0m.

Re the mirror I feel like my wife's Q5 does this but maybe I'm just used to the BMW

Makes sense re the seat belt. I'll check out the spray you mentioned.

Completely depressing the clutch with the 1st issue. Definitely going to have all the fluids done here in the next week or so.

    Thanks again!

I have the same issue getting my rs4 into first sometimes. You either have to let the car roll a little and then it'll fall into first, or take it to second then first while you're stopped. my a4 with 40,000 miles did the same thing. idk why it does that.

i haven't seen much of that color, agree some more pics would be great

    Thanks man!

The one on the 9th is at Audi Exchange in Highland Park. I believe you have to RSVP via the event they have up on their Facebook page and email the contact they list there if you want to show your car.

What time is the one on the 2nd? I'll be tied up at Rise & Drive for a couple hours that morning but may be able to make it out to Schaumburg depending on the timing.

The belt retraction is, as someone else stated, because the belt gets dirty. To clean the seatbelt, get a bucket of hot water, put a very small amount of gentle detergent (Woolite or similar) in the bucket, and pull the belt all the way out. Take a brush and wash the belt out. You'll be shocked at how much grime has accumulated. Let the belt dry and then test to see if the issue is fixed. If not, try the silicon grease that venom recommended.

Congrats and welcome again. What a beautiful color, great find! As others have already said, the arm rest and glove box are well documented weak points of the B7 body style. My arm rest was also broken when I purchased my car so I feel your pain in trying to find a replacement. From what I've been able to find, ECS Tuning no longer sells the black leather arm rest either.

    Congrats sir and welcome!!!

I think we all share the love of rare things here and so finding an already rare car in a colour that makes it even more rare and exclusive is very cool! Deep down inside I truly wish my car was either Suzuka Grey or at least Sprint Blue, but Daytona Grey will have to do; my car ticked all the right boxes otherwise in terms of condition and mileage when I found it in the limited inventory available in the Canadian market 18 months ago when I got into it.

I had my arm rest and glove box both fail on my previous B7 S4 avant and so when I got into my RS4 I just flipped the arm rest into the up position for preservation mode! haha. Also, I (purposely) rarely use the glove box and when I do I am very gentle with it.

For what it's worth the passenger mirror would tilt down when in reverse in my S4 avant; not just a bimmer thing!

    Enjoy man!!!

That's what I figured. Luckily mine is still intact but the creaking noises are bugging me!

Couldn't agree more Marky G! I'll have to look for some pics of yours through your profile! I agree Suzuka is amazing but I also love Daytona! All these cars are really special imo.

'preservation mode' haha - I may have to do that.

Thanks for the note on the mirror - maybe it's just these special RS mirrors that do not have that functionality

Has nothing to do with codes or maintenance needed, it's just a dummy counter to a set mileage.

Never saw that in the VCDS optons. If it can be coded I owe you a beer (or 10).

a quick search - pretty sure it's just switching to passenger if you have memory seats - which all rs4s do:

Incorrect. Only those with the premium package.

I'm the only RS4 owner I know of without the premium package. Is my car a unicorn?

Should the passenger side mirror tilt down when in reverse if the mirror adjustment knob is on driver’s position?

Thank you all for the input on this - it was making me nervous parking in the city without the mirror tilt. I just tried out bshanna's suggestion of putting the mirror adjustment indicator to the right/passenger side (opposite of BMW) and it works!

komseh - cannot confirm if it's on all RS4s - mine does have the premium package.

Thank you all again for the replies. I am absolutely loving the car!

Anyone have any ideas on what I'm missing with regard to my inability to connect via Bluetooth?

The car shows up on my iPhone as Audi UHV 5091. I have the attempted the pairing process with just ignition on, car running and the default code of 1234 as well as 0000,1111,5555 and 9999 with no luck.

To pair your phone with your car you must make the car think you are just getting in the car. It's a strange thing but is in the manual. I can walk you through it if you send me a pm, I'll give you my number and you can call me

    1. Go into carsnd reset all the old settings.

    2. Take the key out of the ignition

    3. Reinsert the key and begin the pairing process.

I believe the Suzuka Grey car that was for sale for quite a while was non-premium package.

IIRC, it had woodgrain trim, did not have RNS-E, etc.

That's correct, @FrankerX owned that car for a while. Here is the thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ghlight=suzuka

Edit: Actually, there's another one currently in the classifieds - http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...4#post11901024

There are actually quite a few cars without PP. Over 200 according to the registry. Immediate telltale is radio instead of RNS-E.

Memory seats? What are those? <sarcasm off>
ps: The only good picture of my Recaros I have. Only the harness is not OEM, sorry about that.

Yah second time i've done this today. Of course i assume everyone is in the US :) seems like most US cars had whatever package gives you memory seats. Cept for those poor jerks that have no options AND no euro seats...

As I've said before just awesome These last two shots really bring out Lava Gray. Interior seems to be in a near mint condition for the mileage or at least what could be seen in those two pictures. POs must've taken really good care of it. Great score man!

When I was shopping for an RS, I found one in LA in Daytona Gray that did not have premium package. When I tried to negotiate the price down a bit because it was missing RNS-E, the seller told me that true enthusiasts dont listen to anything but the engine and that I seemed more like a mini-van type. LOL

Maybe it is my monitor, but the two shots above look very close to Daytona...id love to see the two colors side by side!
