    Tire mishap. Have a question.

I got a little too close to a shoddily repaired curb this weekend, and it pulled a chunk off the sidewalk of my stock Contisportcontact 5 tire. The tires only have about 10,000 kms on them (I swap over to winters 5 months a year) and look new, so I was hoping I could get away with replacing only one tire rather than 2. Is there an amount of treat that needs to be intact or a formula to figure out if throwing a new tire in the mix would be kosher?

Should be OK with one. I have Outlander SUV and my wife blew out a tire hitting a curb....... The tires only had about 10k also when I changed it. Put them on the rear just to be safe.

Check with tirerack. I remember they offered a tire shaving service where you can buy a new tire and have them shave it down to match the other 3.

sometimes you can find a good used tire of the same size and brand on ebay. i was once in the same situation and found a tire on ebay with about the same tread wear as the other 3 tires i currently had.

I replaced just one at 20,000 miles or so and didn't have any problems.

I'm going to have the tread depth measured, and Tire Rack said they could shave one tire down to match. I can't believe the price difference between here in Canada, and from Tire Rack in the US. Tire rack charges $136 a tire US, and the cheapest I could find one up here is $286. Tire rack is cheaper with shipping, exchange rate, and shipping...
