1978 Audi fox wagon project... am i getting in over my head?

so ive wanted a wagon for a while, and have always loved the look of the older audis. i found a 1978 audi wagon fox, with the 4 speed manual nearby. the car has been posted for sale several times, and the price has dropped on it. it has a little bit of rust on the rear hatch. it ran when it was purchased last, started to overheat, and the guy never looked into it due to money. he said he has a new battery and the car with turn over but doesnt think its getting spark.

im 25, and have a decent knowledge of cars and would be able to do the majority of repairs myself, minus body work or a full engine rebuild. so my questions: how much support is there for this car? would i be able to buy most parts needed, or am i going to be searching constantly for them? how difficult are they to work on? are there any easy engine swaps that can be done for better power and driveability? as far as plans for the car go, id like to get it running as a good weekend car. maybe lowered a bit with some wheels, redo the paint and remove the rust, and then start working on redoing the interior. how feasable is this?

Most cars that are that old alot of parts are discontinued like lights, interior trim pieces. However im sure used parts should still be available. But im sure most of the mechanical parts are still available for the car.Audi tends to use the same parts slightly updated forever. For instance a wheel bearing from a audi 4000 will fit most audis from 1980-2002.So im sure the same deal applies to the fox.

Looking into it, seems like I can probably source most parts. The owner apparently has a lot of parts he hasn't installed, new water pump, thermostat, a few gasket sets, etc. Seen a few posts about people swapping in AEB 1.8t's and 5 speeds, but not much info on that either.
