Some of you know I was considering swapping my S4 for a 911 about six months ago. Well, I traded my '15 DSG Prestige S4 in on a very well-equipped CPO '12 PDK 991 C2S on Friday! I was actually just checking the Porsche locator for Panamera since my mother is looking, and I found a great deal on a newly listed 991 C2S; the dealer is only half an hour away so I jumped on it.

I know some people are going to cry, "They are not in same class! They are two completely different cars! The S4 is God's chariot and everything else sucks!", but I am still going compare/contrast the two since I know others are consider the jump.

Price: My car had a $122k window sticker, which was more than double the S4, BUT I paid around an S4's MSRP, so they are actually very close on price. Granted, I only have just over two years of warranty vs four years on a new S4.

Looks: My S4 was Daytona Gray, which is a great color, but it blended in with every other sedan on the market. I literally had not driven a mile in my Racing Yellow 911 on Friday and had people waving and giving me thumbs up!

Interior: The 911's interior is plush (e.g. leather dashboard) compared to just about any car; I LOVE the ventilated seats, and there are not many creaks for a car with 49k miles. I hated the Alcantara seats in the S4 (felt like they radiated back body heat, esp on hot days), and there were popping/creaking noises from the beginning.

PDK/DSG: FYI: My B6 A4 was a manual, could heel/toe reasonably well, and I still love to row. We bought the DSG S4 because my wife was pregnant at the time and being a nervous first-time parent, I wanted to get a car my klutzy wife could safely drive in an emergency. I could have gone either way in terms of PDK vs manual on the 911. Anyway...

"D" in PDK is actually usable! It does not hunt for seventh gear and force the engine to lug at 30 MPH; give the 911 a little gas and it actually shifts in anticipation of you wanting to accelerate. PDK shifts are solid, even going from second to first. The DSG was a good auto trans, but it did some wonky stuff like emitting a "clunk" in 2-1 shifts even below 5MPH, delayed shifts when cold, and generally felt a bit loose.

My 911 came with the base wheel (The genius at Porsche who said, "Let's put shift BUTTONS on the wheel!" needs to get bus-stop-bathroom swirlie) and I already ordered the steering wheel with paddles since I shifted manually 99% of the time in the S4.

Acceleration: I loved the S4 and its AWD from a dig, and how strong it was from 2.5k to 5.5k RPMs. The 911 is the complete opposite. I actually was not initially blown away (my expectations were high) on the test drive of the 911, and was not 100% sold on the car. It turns out that I was short shifting since I was used to the S4. The 911 is the opposite of the S4; it does not show its teeth UNTIL 5k RPMs, and then it feels like you are getting pushed down the road!

My time behind the 911's wheel is limited, but I do miss the low-end torque of the S4.

Handling: The S4 handles pretty well, but the sports diff can't make up the beer belly poking out over the front axle. I know some go to great lengths to improve the S4's body roll in corners, but I decided pretty early on that I was just going to love the fat chick for who she was, and then move on to svelter pastures.

Everyone with a Y chromosome over the age of eight knows 911s are some of the best handling cars in the world, and they are correct. What I did not expect was how comfortable the car is even with 20" wheels on crappy Boston-area roads.

Sound: Porsche Sport exhaust is ridiculous; normal mode sounds great, and then sport mode sounds like satan being splashed with holy water. I would have paid for a factory upgraded exhaust on the S4 (I am not really a modder); OEM exhaust was OK, but the DSG farts were fun.

Year-Round Driving: I sold my business about a month ago, and no longer need a daily driver or the S4's all-weather performance. I already ordered another set of wheels for the 911's winter setup, which will be more than adequate for occasionally driving after roads have been plowed.

Toddler Duty: Our 16-month-old son was rarely in the S4 (we also have a city beater), but room was never an issue even with his gigantic Britax car seat. I found ONE convertible car seat that will allow him to ride rear facing behind the 911's passenger seat, and still allow my 5' tall wife to comfortably ride shotgun; it is supposed to arrive Thursday and my fingers are crossed!

Insurance: We live in Somerville, MA (a few miles from Boston) and our policy only increased ~$50/year when swapping the S4 for the 911, which was a major pleasant surprise. We have two cars, and a condo on the policy, just for reference.

I received a lot of help with the purchase, so feel free to ask any questions!

    Edits to add:
    1. I uploaded the pictures to different site, and should now be visible.
    2. A PSE video for those who have not heard it.

Yup, I noticed the picture issue too! DOH!

Thoughts? I uploaded to imgur, and then inserted them as I would normally.

Can you see the pictures? I know the iPad can be wonky...

I was only looking at manuals when considering pre-991, so I still love to row!

Try tapatalk maybe? It should work to upload pictures from a file storage site no matter what device you're using. I think at least. I felt the same way about the first 911 I drove but once you do keep it in higher rpm's it is completely addicting lol.

Did you order a tech art wheel? Check out the shark werks website it's pretty awesome for tips and info.

I see them perfectly fine, possibly recently fixed?

OP, since you didn't get the Turbo, what stopped you from getting a newer Cayman instead?
Also FYI, a 2012 S4 comes for a 1/4 the price of a 2012 911 C2S, but it is already an apples to oranges comparison

I got a great deal on the SD wheel (no lights) from someone on RL, and a ridiculous deal on these wheels from another RL member :-)

I will definitely check out Sharkwerks website, thanks!

Hey, I'm not mad at your choice to move to a 911. What a thing of beauty in every facet (looks, performance, comfort, buid, etc.)

I uploaded to a different site.

Fair question regarding the Cayman: We have a kid (and might have one more), and the back seats of the 911 are actually perfect for toddlers, especially when they can forward face.

The CL wheels were a definitely a turnoff when I was considering the 997.2 GTS.

It is crazy how the 911 is so addicting to drive even at a leisurely pace.

It is a skanky, rainy day here, so my midday drives will be later in the week. My wife is probably taking off Friday (our kid still goes to daycare five days/week), just so the adults can go for a fun ride

    Lovely machine! Nice move!
The 911's rear wheels are VERY wide. It's no good in the snow unless you have the C4 - and even then it's meh... even with snow tires. I'd not drive it unless roads are clear and snow virtually all melted.
    Enjoy it!!

Thanks! Do you have first-hand experience with the C2 in snow, or just speculating? I am genuinely asking because most owners say the are great on plowed roads (as long as there is clearance, obviously) with snow tires since the engine is over rear axle. I don't plan on taking it out in blizzards, regardless.

This thread on Rennlist is invaluable if you are considering a CPO 991.1. Again, feel free to ask me any questions.

Love it love it love it! That's the other model I was watching when I jumped on to my Cayman S. I don't even want to know how much you got it for because I don't think want to be sad or mad how much depreciation I missed out on over the last 7 months...
Either way, my Cayman S is the absolute favorite part of my day, every day, hands down. Best money I've ever spent. Gets a minimum of 3 thumbs up every day.
Love the Racing Yellow. Congrats. Can't wait to see it in person!
Let me know what winter tires you try. I have ContiWinterContact for now; they performed well for the few times I drove them in snow. We'll see how a whole season goes.

Thanks! I remembered you telling me to jump on something when it popped up, and that actually helped me pull the trigger vs waiting until the spring.

Driving it is a whole different experience compared to anything I have ever been in; it is somehow completely refined, while simultaneously being incredibly angry.

I will not tell you the price because you will cry, but the dealer tried to kill me on the S4, so it sort of balanced out.

    Horses for courses.

No kids in the next few years and have another car? I would have gone Cayman S/GTS in that scenario.

I am sure the manual is fun, but not sure why manual drivers always think it is the ONLY acceptable transmission...

because they haven't driven one? im a die hard manual driver but the PDK is the best all around transmission to date.
it's compliant enough for the street but on the track their shifting algorithms are almost telepathic...

great move on the car and with the pdk. pdk everything!

Congrats on the new ride Fatso!

Can't believe how good that PSE sounds. Holy hell! Thanks for sharing the vid.

For those of you that haven't been in a 991, the interior is off the charts nice. Can't believe it's by the same company that made the uber-plastic 996! Porsche have seriously upped their game.

Exactly! I love manuals, and I totally get the argument against a crappy auto transmission, but PDK is great. I HATED "D" and "S" in the DSG (sucked equally, in different ways), but I tried "D" on the way home from the dealer in traffic and I was impressed.

I will probably still primarily drive the 911 with paddles once the new steering wheel arrives, but it is nice to know that the "auto" modes actually work pretty well.

PSE sounds even better when behind the wheel. The 991 you were in did not have it? It was a must-have option for me!

Pictures would not even do the 991's interior justice, especially with the leather interior.

Did not mean that at all. A good DCT is more than "acceptable" and this car will no doubt be an epically fun daily driver. But just hard (for some of us) to imagine giving up the 3rd pedal if you have the option to keep it. More fun = More better!

But to balance out the lack of a manual, you have much yellow.

How much more yellow could this be?
And the answer is none. None more yellow.

    Enjoy it!

You don't drive a car with a manual transmission - you play it like a fine musical instrument

nice man congrats! Looks amazing, did you look at a F-Type R as well? I'm thinking between that or some form of 911 as my next car.

Absolutely awesome car - congrats! I am also trying to decide between a used 991 or a 997 turbo once my S4 lease is up. The 991 is clearly the better car in pretty much every way but resale is strong and my budget will prob only permit for a base C2. Drove one recently and it felt quite slow. I am sure the C2S is a big step up. Also drove the new turbo C2 and it felt much faster than the 3.8L C2S! Go figure.

That said, I despise Porsche for its pricing. $1k for remote entry that comes standard on a Kia? $700 for auto dimming mirrors? $2k for power memory seats? Hell the 997 turbos I am looking at retailed for $130k and didn't even come with heated seats standard. Porsche ought to be ashamed.
