Transmission warning after steering wheel swap

Oddly enough, when I changed from a A6 3-spoke wheel with paddles tot he S6 wheel with heat, I now have a transmission error. The yellow gear pops up and says it's OK to drive normal but the paddles do not work. With the standard A6 3-spoke, which I swapped in from a 4 spoke originally, the paddles work fine.

I went back into VCDS to change the coding but it is still set to the correct coding for the wheel. The one thing I have noticed is the "-" on the left hand paddle does not light up like the right hand paddle for "+".

I'm thinking there may be a wiring problem and will take the wheel off and inspect but everything looked good at first glance. Anyone else run into something similar.

So on my lunch break, I swapped back wheels as this is super easy.

Yep, now the "-" paddle lights up again and I have no transmission fault.

Looks like I'll be sending this steering wheel back to the Netherlands. That's a shame as this is the 2nd time buying an S6 wheel off eBay with poor results in a month. That last one came from Germany and DHL lost it before it left Frankfurt. Lame. Hope I find another one soon and the 3rd time's a charm.

You may have to heed your signature and just get a full package from ECS, or whoever it is here who sells them.

Haha. Yeah, not quite what I meant. I'm willing to buy a used item and take a chance when there's a guarantee. It's an OEM part after all and if it doesn't show up in the condition claimed, it gets refunded. The time out doesn't bother me as I have a functioning vehicle and this swap literally takes 5mins or less.

You swapped a non heated wheel for a heated wheel. That's your problem right there.

Did you change the slip rings on the steering column? It's not a straight plug and play swap.

You need the clock spring from a cold weather package car so the heat can work and get rid of the light in vcds..

My car has the cold weather package. It originally had the 4 spoke, heated wheel without paddles. I swapped to a 3 spoke, non-heated wheel with paddles while I looked for an S6 or RS6 wheel with heat. I am currently looking for one so if you have one with heat, PM me.

I didn't include this info as it wasn't relevant to the transmission error.

I see you have a MY16 which I believe has different controls. Otherwise I'd be interested. Maybe someone can confirm?
