    Supercharger differences along the years...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was reading in the B8 S4 forums not too long ago, and someone had mentioned that the superchargers have changed for the later model 3.0T. I'm not sure what the cutoffs are, but I'm sure a parts guy could tell ya. But I went searching for actual pictures, instead of parts microfiche, of these superchargers or any information about the differences. Well I just stumbled upon some eBay postings by a salvage yard company that goes by the name of "pacific-motors". The following pictures are his. No I have not asked him to borrow them. I just merely stitched them side by side for comparison purposes. I am not stating anything about these superchargers, I am just merely posting these up in case someone else may be curious as well...

Old Supercherger on left... new type supercharger on right.

Forgot to mention that the ebay seller also mentions the models these came out of. The new type supercharger came off a 2016 A8L, and the old type came off a 2013 S4

    Supercharger differences along the years...

The newer one is from the SIMOS 16 engine which meets the EURO6 spec. This engine has direct injection as well as intake manifold injection. The newer supercharger supports free wheel if boost is not needed.
I havn't tried but I don't think the newer gen S/C will work on the SIMOS 8.5 engine.

Sorry to be pedantic but the EU6 engine code is CREC. SIMOS refers to the ECU.

In NA the CREC engine has only been used in C7.5 A6 & A7 and maybe one of the Q's, (and obviously the newer A8), but not the last of the B8.5 S4s and S5s.
Whereas in ROW the CREC engine was used in S4s and S5s from mid 2014.

Of course SIMOS is the ECU type.
I named them by ECU type because the SIMOS 16 based engines are also CREA, CRGE and CTDA besides the mentioned CREC.

Oh. Thanks for the info! Didn't know that. I'm curious if aside from the mentioned differences if there is any positive differences in airflow and/or cooling.

The revised supercharger is in the 16+ Q7, A6, A7, A8 but not in any US spec S4/S5. The main benefit, as mentioned above, was the ability to decouple the supercharger for better fuel economy.

It's hard to say whether there are any performance benefits to the new engine since it hasn't been in any performance applications here in the US, and I'm pretty sure no tuners have touched it.

According to APR and their testing with the C7.5 A6 it makes better power than the first Gen and handles heat better with better efficiency .. i believe they said the tune they have on the A6 is faster than an S6

So APR is able to reflash the SIMOS16?

They can't have been referring to the 3.0 TFSI. In an early part of the "APR teaser" thread in the S4 forum there's a bit where the discussion was actually serious and IIRC the APR guy admitted that they have no plans to crack the SIMOS 16. It makes sense as APR is a pretty US-focussed tuner and there aren't enough cars with the SIMOS 16 in the US to make it worthwhile.

My guess is no tuner except maybe MRC will even bother now. I've spoken to virtually every tuner and they've been saying similar. Shame really. If you wanna tune it's piggyback only or trade out

REVO have told me that they intend to support the SIMOS 16, but indeed time will tell. There is still a substantial market in Europe where cars have been using the CREC engine for the past 2 years. Once they crack the ECU and have the remaps they soon earn the R&D cost back. However if there's no change in 6 months I may give up. I'll be tempted to go for a TTRS, in spite of the "hairdresser" jokes.

I've heard that too but I can't see it's that profitable how many simos16 cars will want a tune. 10%? I don't see it happening. Hang on for the rs3 saloon

I think you'd be surprised. Like the B5 S4, the B8/8.5 S4/S5 is an enthusiasts car. I think the desire for tuning increases as cars enter the used market. I also suspect that the B9 is not going to be as tunable.

I prefer the TTRS over an RS3 saloon (that's why I have an S5 instead of an S4).
