Folks, can anyone confirm that 275/40R 20 will fit without rubbing on a 2017 Q5 on stock 20 inch rims ( peelers) and stock suspension. I have the opportunity to get this size winter tires and want to make sure they fit. Also, is it recommended to run that size since they are almost 1/2 inch shorter and 3/4 inch wider?

They won't rub but that size is also probably too wide for stock 20" wheels. Those are 8.5" wheels and most 275/40R20 tires are specd for 9"+ wide wheels.

And trust me, you don't want to riding on 275 series winter tires. You'll just float on top of the snow rather than cut down through it. You want a narrow tire. I'm running 235/55R19 on 19x8.5". If you want to run 20", you stuck with stock size of 255/45R20.

I'll take that advice, thank you. Good point on the floating on snow comment.

It's true that you'll want skinnier tires for snow, but they'll fit just fine. The 20"s have more sidewall than larger wheels, so there is more flexibility.

What about 275/45/20's ? Seem like that should fit still minimum rim width is 8.5. diameter is .7 or .8" larger. I just measured roughly 12mm from my tire to the knuckle.

    This got me thinking -295-s-are-on!-Pics

Might even smooth out the ride a bit with a bit more rubber

I bought 295 for snow lol. I've done 285 and 295 plenty of times. And Martin is correct. They will not cut well, and you'll get pushed around more.

We don't see snow here barely ever and I have a different rig for Tahoe trips.

I will say, I had to drive in the middle of the small snowstorm that we had here in the tri-state with the 295 DWS and it did pretty well.

Should be better for drifting then!

I also drove in the tri state snow storm and although the 295 managed, I did feel them slip and slide when going around 2 roundabouts. 295 DWS are good but not great. I've always ran snow tires and wanted to give AS a try for this winter but now I'm looking to pick up snow tires.
