timing chain/guides would generally be considered a maintenance item... unless it was specifically written in some of the more expensive warranties and can be proven to be a "failure" and not just maintenance issue...

With timing belts or tensioners those i'd consider wear and tear item/maintenance but IMO timing chain shouldn't be. Even though ours are wear and tear

Why would these not be considered an internally lubricated part? These are not parts that are not easily replaced or accessed like a oil filter, or a fuel filter, brake pads, etc... Out of curiosity, I'll call my warranty co tomorrow & ask.

insurance/warranty companies DO their research on these cars... they know the expense and problems and generally make sure to write these as not covered (they try to make money not lose)

try calling a few and tell them what car you have them ask specific questions about... What If ???
if they say its covered ask them to email you the docs on that...

they will either tell you that they are unable to sell you a warranty for your car or it would be in the 5 to 7k price range

you would also have to be able to prove all oil changes at 3k miles and all maintenance has been done by certified mechanic and THEN will have to have all damaged parts shipped to them to verify including the oil... its crazy :(

Just out of curiosity, I called my warranty company today, & spoke with the rep about the timing chains, and tensioners. If they failed and need to be replaced, they would be covered.

You are correct, they know what car's they're dealing with and what the common concerns are. Yes, for major repairs they may ask for maint records (would not even be a concern), not uncommon.

I've yet to mail parts back, unless there is a core charge.

So, if my car has changed hands a few times, how do I find maintenance records for it? and how do I know if mine falls under the recall for the timing chain? 04 S4

I would think if a previous owner shelled out 10k for a timing service they would have kept a record of it .....

You might be able to get away by saying that previous owner has no maint record. Also I don't believe there is a recall for the timing chain. I definitely would have known as my shop has done about 5 already.
