    What's the difference between axles...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Right front inner joint came apart, searching for used OEM axles in my area but can only find axles for auto trans cars...

    The car is 04' A4 Quattro 1.8t w 6-spd.

I am in need of part numbers 8E0407271AH and 8E0407272AH.

The auto car's axles part numbers are 8E0407271AA and 8E0407272AA.

Will the auto axles bolt up and fit the manual trans car? or will that result in another tow? Can't imagine they would be that different..

Let me know what's up guys, Thx.

I think the auto trans is quite a bit wider. Not sure if flanges or the inner joint are the same, maybe you could switch over the inner joint if it is.

Care to share the price? I'd be interested in knowing. I would assume something like $450 a piece?

Also, if you're in a pinch, I'd grab some axles from Advance Auto or something. Just make sure to get new ones and not refurbs. Otherwise, Raxles is the way to go, but of course, you'd have to wait a few days.

I agree with Advance Auto as an alternate source. I disagree on new vs rebuilt. The new axles they sell are completely aftermarket of questionable quality. The rebuilt I picked up was based on a VAG core (could still see the VAG logos on the parts). If it matters to you.

The reason I say go new over rebuilt is due to the longevity of reground cv joints in the manufactured axles. I've always read/been told that the joints are the weak part of rebuild axles since they don't replace the joints rather they just rebuild them. I could be entirely wrong on this, but its just what I've heard over the years.

When possible, I have replaced just the joints with new ones. Inners can be tough to source. I have also picked up used assemblies from yards that were in great shape ( transmission swap). Typically the inners never go and at worst I end up just changing an outer. Short story is you should be able to find good used assembles ($50). That gets you an OEM axle and a good inner. $90 gets you a new outer.

If I'm not mistaken the B7 2.0 axles should fit as well. My only issue with Raxels is the $$$.

The Raxles are very nice went with those on my RS6 but for the B6 I figure that used OEM would be my best bet.

Lately GKN axles have popped up in a few stores but again they are almost as expensive as the Raxles.

Regarding the aftermarket axles, I've heard nothing but bad news so trying my best not to purchase those especially the "reground" stuff.

As mentioned, in a pinch situation not a bad choice until the axles of choice arrive just have to do the work twice.

The used axles from a yard in Phx was 49$ ea. Seems like the manual trans cars are a damn unicorn underneath a stack of hay out here.

No, they won't last any longer than OEM since they are essentially rebuilt to OEM standards.

Here's my take on replacing drive axles. I figure I will only replace the axles once during my B6 ownership. I'm currently at 225K miles and have only had to replace one axle (front right). Considering the life of the axle the cost to me becomes immaterial. Having to replace it a second time would be a royal pain in the ass and worth spending the extra $$ up front to avoid the potential of doing it twice. I look at it as insurance against me having to do it again.

EDIT: I guess I should clarify that I am advocating using Raxles rather than some cheaper aftermarket replacement.

225K!! You always kept great care of your car.

I was in the same mindset when buying raxles back in 2012(ish), but the boot quickly tore less than two years later. Might be due to debris from the road or overexertion from my ride height.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I went with Raxles based upon literally years of good feedback across numerous different forums. Did Marty make it good for you?

He did. I was impressed with the overall buit of the axle, but I went into it knowing the possibility they wouldn't last like I would want them to. Like the younger guys would say, "race car!!"

Sorry for the wait. Dealer in town wanted 886$ for the driver side. The passenger was a little more.

My front OEM axles lasted 14 years. If the Raxles axles last as long as the OEM, I don't expect I will be replacing them again. I am still running the OEM rear axles. Raxles axles are assembled using new CV joints, not reground used CV joints.
