2002 engine swap from VW to A4

I have a 2002 A4 with the 1.8t that had a timing belt snap. I have sourced another 2002 engine from a passat. Will they interchange perfectly or are their differences to where it won't work out. I searched for swap, 1.8t, etc, and found where people were swapping other audi engines in, but just haven't found the correct thread yet where this has happened.

Thanks much for helping a noob out. I just don't want to buy a donor vehicle and find out that it won't transplant over. Also, while I'm on the subject, are the auto transmissions the same (not the CVT), between the audi and VW or do I need the VIN to verify that?

    Found this thread http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...T-vs-Audi-1-8T

Some say easy, some say no so much. Guess I need to find the engine code and verify they are the same first and then it might be doable. Looks like the audi will have an AMB and the passat an AWB. Probably not doable, especially with the oil pan differences.

Cooling setup is different, and the harness will be slightly different. IF you're swapping the harness over, you'll want to swap over the hard pipes, rear flange, and electric thermostat (might have to massage the thermostat opening some to fit the marginally larger housing).

Might be easier to just get a used audi engine or find out what happened to this one first. Its a craigslist car with a "blown" engine, so who knows what happened.
