Hi guys - just picked up a 2014 Monsoon Grey - Black/Silver S4. 6MT and sport diff. I'm coming from the M3 community, having traded an 05 M3 convertible for the S4. I drove the M3 for about 8 years before family demands pushed me to a 4door. After waffling between an M3 and an S4, I settled for the S4. I couldn't be happier. But modding - here we go again. . .

One quick question: how long do you guys let yours warm up before "spirited driving"? On the M3, I watched the oil temp until it hit between 140 and 160. That didn't necessarily correlate to the water temp. I don't see anything other than water temp on the screen. I'm assuming with a supercharger, I need to make sure oil gets fully distributed and warmed before winding it up?

Thanks and looking forward to the forum. . .

Congrats on the new ride! I've had my 2013 for about 3 weeks now and love it.

As for how long on warm up, I'd probably think that a 3-5 miles of 'normal' driving would let all the fluids get to temp properly before really getting into a 'spirited' mode. I'm not sure for my S4, but I know that for my old Legacy GT, I wanted to make sure the transmission oil was up to temp before I really started banging any gears. (The Legacy wouldn't let you into Sport mode until the water temp was up to a certain threshold, but you could get there just idling the car, which does nada for the transmission oil and such...)

Welcome and congrats on new wheels.

My daily route takes me about 3 to 4 minutes to get off side streets and on to a road where I can open up a bit. Everything is to temp by then according to my P3 VIDI. Especially when outside temp is 50 plus.

Probably not the scientific answer you're looking for but hope it helps a bit.

    Congrats on the new ride!

If you buy something like Carista, you can enable an oil temperature gauge (and lap counter) for the center display.

Congrats on the purchase, it's a great car and I love the combo you go with 6MT and monsoon grey! I find that my car gets up to temp within 5 min but as you said thats by water temp not oil.

I normally let my car warm up for a few minutes before I start slamming gears.

Welcome to the club! Enjoy the new car!

It takes almost 10 minutes for your oil to get to 140 degrees and that's not warm by any means.

That was my observation in the M3, and from what I'm reading, this engine/supercharger runs a bit warmer. Guess I'll stick to my old habits. . . .

Congrats on the purchase. Great choice on going with the 6MT (I may be biased).

You need to enable engine oil temp using Vag-Com or Carista. Normal operating temperature is around 210. The gauge in the cluster shows "normal" beginning at about 140 degrees. I don't push my car until it's at least at 190 degrees.

From a cold engine, city driving, 78 degrees outside, it took my car 6 minutes, 49 seconds for the oil temp to reach 143 degrees.

I came from an 09 M3, and I'm missing the NA V8; however, this is a good compromise.
