    Ran over multiple nails..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Thought I might be ok to patch a tire with a slow leak but it actually has multiple leaks - one nail and another that looks like a flat metal blade.

They're DWS 06's (255/35-19) all 4 currently at about 6/32-7/32 tread depth left. New ones are 10/32 I believe. Thinking I have a few options -

    - Replace all 4 tires
    - Replace 2
    - Replace the 1 and shave it down
    - Replace the 1 and leave as new, making it about 3/32 off from the other tires...

The warranty plan I have will replace just the 1 tire for this claim.

    Thoughts?

I don't like the idea of shaving down a perfectly good tire. If I were in your position, I would purchase 2.. Place the new ones on the same axel. Discard the bad one, then keep one as a spare.

All four need to be within the tollerance of one another for the systems to work properly

Exactly. Two always seem to wear at a faster rate for me so it makes sense to change them in pairs.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

I would imagine that's if you're running an 18" wheel vs. a 19", then yes.
We're talking 3/32" here, pavements heights in different lanes fluctuate more than that

I tried to have them replace 3 of mine when all 3 out of 4 tires had sidewalls were starting to fail. They blamed me, even though I maintained the tire pressure up at 40 psi to make sure that didn't happen. All 3 were from the same batch number showing the same issues. But after that treatment, I swore off buying a set of Contis again.

I had nails through two of mine and had no issues. Even had the Discount tire warranty so now I have two new spares sitting in the basement along with the two new ones on the car.

Even if your run 18s with 19s you are OK because the outer diameter is the same, you just have less meat around wheels on 19s. 3/32 however is a big difference to quattro, pavements heights doesn't matter here, when axle rotates, the system expect the left side and right side wheel travel the same length (Why diameter is the only important factor here), if they don't, system think a slippage is happening, and will change distribution of torque to reduce slippage. In quattro, same rule apply to all four wheels, so 3/32 difference between any pair of wheels will make the system confused.

Where did you buy them? Industry standard is to keep them within 2/32.

I had the same experience. Replaced at the installer when a piece of metal road debris, shredded my tire and damaged the inner lip of the wheel rim. Had wheel repaired at Wheel Collision Center

Guess that makes sense. I did the installation because I have access to a tire mounting machine and tire balancer. But apparently I'm not qualified enough for them.

Yes, but not for thousands of miles, and pavement height won't ruin differentials...since the wheels are still spinning at the same rate. Every mile you drive with one tire being 3/32" off from the rest introduces extraneous wear to the differentials.

You're driving a $60k car. Either buy a new tire and shave it down, or buy all 4 tires. The cost of replacing a diff is worth about 8-10 full sets of high-performance tires.

Damn warranty plan only covering 1!?

I ran over some nails on all 4 but i bought the extra tire windshield dent and wheel warranty and they swapped all 4.
I have to call and see how many times i can do that though because i have already replaced 2 more tires and 2 wheels on top of that.
    Patching from inside is good.

Hey thanks for the feedback guys. I checked the tire today and it seems only one of the nails is causing a leak. The other one may not have gone all the way through the tread (no bubbles using the soap water test). Stopping by the dealer today so I'll ask them to confirm but if thats the case, gonna just ask them to patch the one and be done w/ it.. prob replacing all 4 tires in the spring anyway.

Tire Rack will do it if you buy the tire from them. Otherwise do a google search.
