    Help !! Audi A5 3.2l 2009 tic / rattle ... Timing chain ?? Video inside --

    Hi,

I need your opinion guys , I have a 2009 A5 3.2L , 99,000 km and I've been having this Rattle / Tic noise since a couple of months (4-5) I always thought it was a loose heat shield and it didn't really bother me so I decided to leave it like that till next maintenance appointment at the garage ...

I got it in last week for oil change and asked mechanic to check that noise as well ... turns out it's my timing chain that's loose and I have to get both upper chains replaced 2k + job , now before putting in that kind of money ... I wanted to have a second opinion to see if it might be something else like a heat shield or cat ?

The car runs fine no CEL , at start up you can hear the rattle for a second and then the car is running good in idle ... when I reach 1200 RPM and only at 1200 RPM I hear the Rattle/Tic sound if I leave my pedal steady , if I go down to 1100RPM or up to 1300RPM it stops ...

Rattle seems to come from under the car , here is the video.

    Thanks for the help !

Woah yeah that's the timing chain. Sounds really rough. Don't wait. If it fails you're looking at an expensive mess.

    Thanks for the reply !

I just can't understand why isn't it make that rattle noise at idle ? If the chain was loose it should right?

Can it be something in the exhaust line / cat?

It could be the cat but it sure sounds like the chain. If you think it's the cat, have your mechanic check that first. Cheaper than a new timing chain.
