    People on air. What's the purpose of a frame notch?

    From a quick google search it looks like it's popular in the VW and hot rod world for going lower when aired out by making a cutout for the axle to fit into. I see no place that it would be relevant on our cars.

    A notch is usually so you can go lower and 2 so the frame wont hit the axle from my knowledge . There's really isn't no need to notch the frame on our cars. And yeah it's safe as long as it's a strong notch built/welded or bolted properly.
    Not part of my Audi build but im planning on notching the frame on my truck.

    When I air out i want to basically be on the ground. Currently I have some gap. Would a notch even make a difference? Ive got a local trusted shop wanting to do mine for $100

    I've had VWs on air and I had one of them notched. When people get their frame notched, it's because (in most cases) the frame rests on top of the passenger side axle at 0 psi. This causes the passenger side to sit slightly higher than the driver side giving the car a crooked look when air'd out. Also over time it can lead to broken axles. So when people get the "C-Notch" it's a small cut into the frame allowing the extra clearance for the axle and the car sits level.

    Cons of notching: Because it is considered frame damage, if any insurance adjuster notices it or any shop doing warranty work, etc, your car will be considered totaled. When I was in the process of trading my car in, I got the notch filled but was still shaking in my boots because if the right person saw it, I would've been screwed.

    Luckily on our cars, a frame notch would do nothing (at least I think so). What I have noticed is that the upper control arms rest on the frame inside the engine bay when air'd out so if you wanna get lower, I'd turn to that first.

    Or the easiest way without damaging your car, just buy a lip.

    (My friends GLI that isn't notched. See how the front wheel doesn't tuck)

    Have you crawled under there to look at the mechanics of the suspension and drive train?? The axles aren't the limiting factor. When I air out the inside of my wheel well is essentially laying on top of my tire, so you'd either have to remove your fender liners, run smaller wheels, smaller tires, or a combination of everything.

    I personally wouldn't bother with notching my frame, if you want zero gap I'd install a lip and splitter maybe, as well as side skirts, as far as the rear bumper goes you'd have to extend it (custom body work) also 18's would have you sitting lower
