Annual cost for google maps in 2017 S5

I test drove a Q7 and I think the google maps in the speedo is the same or similar in the S5 which were unavailable at my dealer. Assuming the dash/google maps is the same in the S5, does anyone know what the annual cost is for this service? I believe it is free for 6 months. Is it something you can negotiate?

I was told for the Generation 2 of Audi Connect in the Q7 it would be $199 for 6 months or $750 for 30 months. (Connect PRIME package) you have a choice after the connect PRIME package to purchase to Wi-Fi hotspot (Connect PLUS) either on a monthly, 6 month or 30 month plan. I personally will not be renewing after the 6 month trial. With Apple Carplay, I cant justify the $750 for what im getting.

Having Google Earth maps on the car is kind of gimicky. It's fun at first, but I didn't find myself really needing it. Besides, in a rare occasion that I might want to use it I can just use my cell phone.

I run Waze on my cell phone to get traffic updates, but I only run it when I'm making long drives.

We recently installed a Pioneer head unit in my wife's Mazda CX-7. The Pioneer unit has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Her car didn't have navigation previously.

The Android Auto UI is extremely easy to use, and you're not on the hook for any data plans aside from what you already have on your phone. You're also not locked into expensive and infrequent OEM map updates. Live traffic is a nice touch too. We've been on two road trips now where it's been very handy. If for no other reason than it has eliminated arguments that come from my wife and I being unable to effectively communicate directions to each other

If I could add a system like that to my 08 S5, I'd do it in a heartbeat. If it's possible to get Auto and/or CarPlay on a newer car, I'd opt straight for that.

Looks like I was wrong... Pay no attention to the text below.

You don't need to pay for the "service" from Audi. Any cellular provider will work (T-Mobile will work better in *some* cases). Just ask your cellular provider how much a data line will be monthly...there's your answer. In the case of T-Mobile, I have a data line that matches the main line with 5GB LTE (2G for all data after the 5GB) for $10/mo.

Nope, this is wrong. Starting with the 2017 A4 and Q7. The Audi Connect services require a license and the prices are correctly stated above. $199/6 months and $750/30 months. The system now uses a built in eSIM. You can't use any third-party providers anymore. There is a SIM slot, but it's disabled in US vehicles. The above plans also include 6GB of hotspot data. Once the 6GB are used up, you can buy additional hotspot data, or add the hotspot to your AT&T Shared Data plan for $10/month. The SIM slot can be activated via vagcom, but it can only be used for the hotspot. The AC services still require you pay for the license, otherwise they don't work.

I stand corrected...wasn't paying attention to the MY in question. That's some BS though. Another reason I won't be buying another Audi anytime soon. They're becoming more and more like iPhones, licensed hardware and software that you don't own.

Not sure about other models, but for my Q7 you have to buy the navigation package to get Apple Carplay, so no need for google maps since you have onboard navigation anyways. I think people are referring to Google Earth not maps here.

If you were using it over Car Play then it was Apple Maps. Google Maps is available on the iPhone, but it only works on the phone itself and not over Car Play. Only apps developed for Car Play work over Car Play. Same with Android Auto. Not all apps that are installed on the phone show up on the MMI.

This is what in my opinion makes both of these systems less attractive. You don't have the app choice that you have on the phone itself. To get Google Maps on the MMI you need an Android phone.

Nah! I find neither system anywhere near mature or completely thought out. With iOS 10, Car Play can now drive two displays in the car, so you can get turn-by-turn directions in the dash/virtual cockpit (will require a firmware upgrade) and something else on the center display. Android Auto can only drive one display so far. Neither one really takes advantage of what's available in a modern car. What about displaying information on the HUD? At this point Android Auto and Car Play are great for eco cars with really terrible and cheap Infotainment systems, but they look a bit shall I say out of their league next to the Virtual Cockpit and the latest incarnation of the MMI. Neither one works very well in an Audi due to the lack of a touchscreen. Both systems are really developed for touch screens and they worked with Audi to somewhat adopt it to non touch screen interfaces. Android Auto does a better job at this currently as you can use the car's touch pad for input. Personally, I find touch screens the worst idea for a car interface, so I think both Apple and Google need to go back to the whiteboard on some of this.
