    Possible engine replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Long story short I purchased a 2011 S4 with a known timing chain problem. I pulled the motor and I am weighing some options. Does anyone know if the 3.0t out of an A6 will be the same as the S4? I know the intake and exhaust are different and possibly some accessories but I could use that off the motor I have. The motors from the A6 are easily 2k cheaper. Just trying to decide if I want to replace the engine or fix it.

The botoom end should be exactly the same, but I would tear down the one you have and build it.

the bottom end is shared between a large variety of models, from what i have found the a6 has different cams, chain tensioner, and pistons. This is going off of oem parts site. I'm almost 100% certain the s4 has more aggressive cams since the a6 idles a whole hell of a lot nicer than my s4. I agree with what Blownone says, tear it down and see what damage is done then go from there.

It was my impression that the 3.0 SC engine in the A6 was somewhat detuned. in comparison to the S4. Maybe just software. Not sure though. Won't fixing it make it more valuable and better for resale?

How about the motor out of a wrecked SQ5, assuming you can find one?

Pulling it apart some tonight to see if it actually jumped time or not. The only thing that makes me nervous is that it had quite a bit of oil on the center plug on the left bank. Will probably do a leak down to check for bent valves etc. Thanks for the input.

Do you know what caused this car to skip timing?

It would be better to see the S6 twin turbo V8 or the 4.2lt V8 from the RS4 in it!

I do not think the car skipped time as the valves do not seem to be bent after doing a leakdown. Have to pull the trans off the motor yet, however with the left upper timing chain cover off the tensioner is maxed. The car has chain rattle on start and if revved slightly, it also had cam crank sensor correlation codes. It was diagnosed by a dealer as well as an indy shop. The guy I bought it from did not want to spend the money on the repair. Also the car has 181k miles on it.
