BRAND NEW to Auds; searched a bunch but could use help filling some knowledge gaps!!!

    Hello all!

I've been a Volvo guy (hence the username) for 20+ yrs and am no stranger to the auto enthusiast community forum vibe. I am also a mechanical engineer and longtime auto enthusiast so there's virtually nothing I can't "DIY." I have done my homework and am running into the classic situation where there is TOO MUCH info vs. not enough. I could use some help from experienced folks like you who probably know this platform like the back of their hands. If any of you have Volvos and similar questions, I'll be glad to return the favor :)

Background - I just bought a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T quattro yesterday, after 8 Volvos over the past 20+ yrs. It was "little old lady" owned and driven, and looks it. 101k on the clock, pristine inside, and nearly the same on the outside. I still have a Volvo for my "fun" car, but looking for a different daily driver just to switch things up. Before you laugh about the "Volvo fun car" thing, my '98 Volvo S90 (last of the RWD era) has a stroked 6.8L LS3 Camaro motor in it (that I put in myself) so believe me, it's riding-a-Swedish-cruise-missile FUN.

Where I've gotten in the past 24H:

P0299 code - new diverter valve on the way.
Checked for recalls - Airbag issue; waiting for Audi to figure out WTF to do about it. I rarely have passengers anyways.
Center console latch on the way.
Glovebox hinges cracking... super glued for now, eBay repair kit on the way.
Have a VAG KKL eBay cable from the Volvo, so I downloaded VCDS-lite and reprogrammed the remote, seatbelt chime, DRL, etc.

What I've got questions on, re: the best way ahead:

    1) I would like to add XM radio. The car has the Audi Symphony 6CD changer. I found a thread on AudiForums that seems to answer the mail here: http://www.audiforums.com/forum/b7-m...007-b7-176209/

    2) I would like to use my iPhone 5s for hands-free, steering-wheel-controlled calling. I occasionally stream music from my phone too, but that is far less important. I am considering the OEM bluetooth retrofit for the calling, and any number of adapters (wired and wireless) for the music.

    3) The car has no trip computer but the manual mentions it... I presume there is a retrofit for that?

    4) Can you program, via VCDS-lite, the headlights and instrument cluster lights to be on ALL THE TIME but shut off when the key is removed? I have been spoiled rotten by Volvos with this... haven't touched a headlight switch in years. Even though I was able to use VCDS-lite to enable DRLs, I presume I'll stilll have to manually turn the switch to get the instruments to light up... seems like a minor issue, but still - GRRR! Suggestions?

    5) Speaking of instruments lighting up, the + and - buttons seem to have no effect on instrument cluster, radio, etc. brightness, regardless of headlight switch position. What am I screwing up?

    6) According to the manual, the right side mirror is supposed to tilt downwards when the car is put into reverse if the the mirror adjustment switch is turned to the right adjustment position. Is this not actually the case? Mine isn't doing it. The mirror moves properly in all axes via the switch otherwise.

    7) In addition to the normal air conditioning condensate dripping from below the front passenger footwell area, I have noticed a second drip in the rear of the car, right between the seats. In fact, it drips directly on the spot where the exhaust pipe Ys out to either side. Literally, right at that intersection. What the hell is back there? Common issue? Plugged drain line or something?

There are a few other issues (some spots I've noticed some oil on the bellhousing and around the tailshaft) but I will tackle those at another time... thanks in advance for any help you can provide on these issues for now!!!

Most of this can be googled to find your answers.....just kidding. I'll help you with some of these though.

As far as your headlights go you probably have the regular manual headlight switch...you cannot program this. If you purchase the Auto headlight switch, it should satisfy your needs. LINK for reference. If you don't already have the rain/light sensor then your lights will be on all the time even in daylight.

The enfig dension unit will take care of your iphone needs.

For the trip computer you would need the multifunction wiper stalk with the extra buttons. Check the link i attached for that.

Awesome, thanks! So, if I understand correctly, VCDS-lite-programmed DRL function is NOT the same as getting the headlight switch with the AUTO mode. Time to shop :)

Be sure to check the cam follower. It's an issue with this car. Easy to check and replace if necessary. Also, you're ready for a timing belt kit if it hasn't already been done. Enjoy your new ride!

    This.

Since it's an 07 you're probably still under warranty for the cam follower. I'm undergoing a warranty claim in the next week for my own car. Make this a PRIORITY.

Timing too. Everything else can be done after

Model year 07s went into service in 06 so anyone with an 07 I would be all over this , don't be thinking its in 07 so I have till 17, you could be in for a shock. check your follower, if its worn through button it back up and talk to your dealer about paying for an inspection. You should get your money back if its found to be damaged.

Okay, timing belt was done so I will get on the cam follower ASAP.

Got auto headlight switch and trip computer wiper stalk on the way.

Looks like to go with an aftermarket all-in-one head unit that retains steering wheel controls (like an AVIC) requires almost $300 in adapters (faceplate, wiring harness, steering controls, etc), plus the cost of the head unit itself! Sounds more economical to stick with the factory HU and add XM and Bluetooth, then just use my phone for nav. So, the question is:

Does the Enfig adapter switch to the phone mode AUTOMATICALLY when a call comes in, or do you have to manually switch the radio input to AUX or something?

    Thanks!

The on-board dension controller should make the switch for you, but don't quote me for this as I don't own one. Also, the unit would eliminate your need for purchasing and retrofitting an oe bluetooth unit which sits under the passenger side carpet.

Okay, making good progress and learning a ton... mostly thanks to this site!

Cam follower inspected (was fine) and replaced as a precaution.

    Sirius satellite radio installed.

Will do the FISCON Bluetooth retrofit at some point (simpler than Enfig Tension but comparable in cost. OEM Bluetooth is a bit cheaper but does not offer A2DP music streaming).

Instrument cluster was dimming fine after all :)

Have DRL / CH/LH switch, auto headlight switch, and trip computer wiper stalk all on the way. I know I will have to run a few wires between the light switch, the DRL switch, and the CEM, as well as wiring up the washer fluid sensor. I also know I will have to use a full VCDS / VAG-COM setup to properly program all that stuff to work. I also know that, unless I install the auto-dimming rear view mirror (and its light sensor), the CH/LH function will work ALL the time; I am totally fine with that.

    Whenever I get VCDS / VAG-COM, I will double-check the right mirror dipping,-in-reverse function.

Glovebox hinges repaired. I countersunk the holes on the eBay bracket to get the screws to seat flush.

Diverter valve gets here tomorrow, so that's next while I wait for wires and plugs for the DRL / trip computer retrofits. If you see anything I'm missing, please chime in! Thanks!

The center drip is probably exhuast condensate leaking out at the clamp bewteen the down pipe and the resonator pipe. I replaced mine with a similar OEM type clamp with the built in clamping bands and could not get it to stop dripping. So I bought a solid peice of slip on exhuast pipe (2 1/4" IIRC) and traditional exhuast clamps. Works like a charm.

Thanks, that's very helpful! I'll check it out, but I suspect it might be coming from elsewhere. I can hear the ::drip-sssssss, drip-ssssssss:: sound of something dripping ONTO the hot exhaust pipe and steaming off, then once the exhaust pipe cools enough, the water runs off the pipe to the ground and starts to form a little puddle.

There is no color or odor... It certainly behaves like water as far as I can tell. I'll have it on post at the auto craft shop for the state inspection after I do the diverter valve, and will put it up on the lift to have a much closer look at that time.
