just as the title states......I thought I read somewhere that the OEM 19" wheels weigh around 22lbs. I am up in the air for new wheels and just want to compare weight..

there was an awesome video showing how they are made but i can't find it right now

Those are for s3's with mag ride but not the Black optics package. The black optics 19's weigh around 27lbs

The 19" Black Optic wheel & tire of my Audi S3 is a combined 48 lbs, per my scale. I measured this with a nearly new ContiSportContact 5P 235/35R19 tire. The tire alone is 21 lbs according to Tire Rack. I didn't know the non- Black Optic wheel was so much lighter than my wheel.

The Black Optic 19" wheels are about 7 lbs heavier per wheel than the 19" Perf. Wheels for the S3. The 19" Perf. Wheels are 21.3848lbs. Black Optics 19" Wheels are about 28 lbs each. Reason why I didn't check the black optics option.

If you already have the 19" Perf. Wheels the options are slim to find a lighter or as light wheel without costing you big $$.

WOW these Black Optics wheels are heavy!

I just posted a few minutes ago for 18" big tire options but now maybe I'll just grab a set of 19" regular (non-black-optics) wheels.

I was thinking originally to get some lightweight 18" wheels. In 18" wheels the Forgestar F14 are the lightest for the $$ without going crazy expensive. Weighing in at 18 lbs each.

Remember to watch what tires you get or getting lighter wheels is wasted. Some EQUAL size tires have weights up to 6lbs in difference each. I use tirerack to compare tire weights.

most people don't even know what great wheels they are and end up 'upgrading' them to some riced out super heavy vape-mobile wheels

check your local craigslist or find someone that has upgraded them- i think i saw a set on CL in my area for around 750-1000$

Great infos guys, I would have assumed a lot WRONG things about our OEM wheels without finding out from you all.

I purchased a set of R8 wheels from a member last night, looking forward to shedding some unsprung weight!

    Just found this thread.

So tell me. What difference would 7 lbs per wheel make for acceleration ? Handling ? Gas mileage ?

I'm thinking of getting an S3 and changing the wheels to Andros copy of the Audi "Rotor" wheels which are about the same weuight as the black optic wheels. Surprised those wheels are 33% heavier than the performance option wheel.

    TIA

If you're thinking of ultimate horsepower and not the area under the curve, you won't notice much of a difference. To an avid racer that competes at a competitive level, 7lbs is huge, acceleration, braking, handling all improve to such a level that different suspension settings would be required.

The biggest advantage of lower unsprung weight (ie lighter wheels and tires) is in ride quality - the suspension manages the lighter weight moving up and down better, transmitting less harshness and impact through to the chassis and cabin. A car with lighter wheels/tires will have a smoother ride with less harshness - smoother doesn't mean softer, it means it gets bounced around less, the tires stay in better contact with the road. The lighter wheels/tires will also make a car feel more nimble and responsive than it does with heavy wheels/tires - in other words, more fun to drive.

Here's a simulation you can do to see the effect - hold a 20 lb weight in front of you with both hands, and try to move it up and down in front of you rapidly. Now change to a 15 lb weight and do the same movement - see how much easier it is for you to control the travel of the weight and to change direction? That's what your suspension sees with lighter wheels/tires.

There is a slight penalty with heavier wheels and tires, but not much - the tire compound (sticky or hard) will make a bigger difference on mileage. Same thing for acceleration or braking - only a very slight degradation from heavier wheels/tires.
