Hey all, new to this forum but not to German cars. I currently have an 04 B6 1.8 auto avant. Love Audi's, so would like to stick with a VAG product. I want to have a much more efficient car and that is what I'm working towards. At the same time my higher priorities are safety and space. With the car seat, and us sitting comfortably up front the B6 is small. Another little one in the coming future will make the back very cramped. So space, especially in the back seat is important. Safety is very much so also, been looking at cars for the most part on IIHS.org. I want to be able to work on the car so I'm straying away from newer cars where swaps and such are more complicated.

My options I've thought of are diesel 6spd swap the B6. Been thinking about diesel swapping an early fwd c5 with an ALH. B5.5 tdi wagon manual swap. Just want a fuel efficient VAG product really, that I can easily maintain and modify. I don't want a car I need to take to the dealer all the time, that won't fly with me. I will at some point buy VCDS so maybe that would help ease dealer visits on newer models. Any input is appreciated. I've been doing small stuff to work with the B6, steel wheels with flat wheel covers. Want to close off the rear wheel wells and flat bottom the car soon. Also would like to remove one of the mufflers, and possibly the center muffler too, but with a family quiet exhaust is important.

I would suggest a dog barrier for the rear of the Avant. Toss the kids back there and you should be able to move your front seats back a little.

    Space issues - solved.

I was figuring on an ALH and as much weight reduction as I could. The early FWD C5 sedans show about 3500lbs, I thought that wouldn't be too bad to work with, the Mk4 Jetta's were just about 3000

I would think you would be fine then. Plan for 1k for trans gearing or ship over a trans. Gas trans dont have good gearing. If you want to go in together on a container or shipping for tdi 01e from europe let me know. Im in the market and dont want to buy a rebuilt one from here.

Ok I'll consider that. I'm already expecting to get a decent bit of parts from Europe. I want to have a 6spd FWD
