So long all....S4 was sold again

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Everyone,

After 2 consecutive B8.5's, I decided to sell my 15' and placed an order for a 2017 M3. Yes, i'll miss AWD but since Audi dropped the MT, I got antsy and felt like now was the best time to make the jump over to BMW and pull the trigger, especially since my M6 S4 was in such high demand since Audi decided to only build automatics for the B9 platform.

Thanks to all the input from fellow AZ'ers over the years and hope one day that Audi brings back the MT to their S models.

I was so close to getting an M3 last year. But I've read many less than flattering reviews and Motor Trend's long term M3 didn't get high praise either.

It's still an awesome car, hope you enjoy it!

Good things come to those who wait. The S4 will likely be available in a manual in year 2 of the B9; MY 2018.

Congrats on the new car though! Lets see it!

I had to think long and hard on the M3 but the time was just right since I was starting to get bored of mine. I ordered a black M3 manual with roof (no carbon roof for me, rather have a funtional option) along with other goodies. I also thought really hard about the winter aspect of it but we don't get as much snow up here as we used to and i'm confident in my driving abilities to get me through the 2 heavy snow days we get a year. I also have a Jeep for the real bad days so I'm covered there. Like I said, it's no knock on Audi....they are incredible cars and I have owned most of their product line over the last 15 years but I was due for a change and the outside of the new B9 looks just like a refresh to me and the no manual option was the kicker for me. Regardless of the diminishing numbers, BMW still offer a manual option and I respect them for not caving in and simply turning their backs on the small number of MT consumers (and to be honest, the new front end of the A4/S4 looks terrible to me...just my thoughts).

I'm hoping that one day the manuals might make a return and the styling of the S4 makes me want to come back to the brand but I'm really excited for the M3 and i'll always enjoy my good times in the few S4's that i've owned. I'll always be an Audi guy at heart but that M3 is probably the most aggressive looking sedan with the power to back it up on the road.

Drove an M3 last weekend. Absolutely sweet ride. Performance is in another league from the S4 and the handling is fantastic. I can't imagine using it in any snow...the car has enough torque to overcome traction at low speeds even in perfect weather. What honestly disappointed me about the M3 was the interior: the plastics were a little disappointing and the one I drove rattled and creaked like a 10 year old car (it only had 4k miles on it). Small price to pay for exotic performance though. Definitely in consideration for replacing my leased S4...if I can find a nice low mileage 991 911 though that'll probably be the way I go. Just a much better put together product, even if it's a little slower.

    Cheers,
    EBS4

Congrats. I'm also contemplating making the same switch pretty soon. Only thing holding me back I'm still under 4K or so on my lease so I need to be in a better position before making the change.

f80s belong on the track. you can choose whether you want to be more comfortable on the street for daily duties or be more comfortable on the track despite all the hard plastics. m3s are in a completely different performance league. at least the f80s come equipped with dynamic steering racks and rear differential standard compared to the b8/8.5.

I wonder if the m3/4 is decently comfortable for daily driving when equipped w the adaptive suspension. Hard to think of a car that heavy with plenty of room for 4 and tons of gadgets as a track car but on some level you are probably right. Still an awesome ride in my book.

Bakedziti are you making that statement based on a feeling or a "friend" at Audi? Some bullsh*t like that or are there actually some new hard facts I'm unaware of?

I will consider the s55 once a revision to the spun crank hub where the bolt backs out (or simply melts) and the engine goes splat, when that is complete i may make a move.

adaptive suspension isn't very noticeable in daily driving conditions. it's only largely noticeable at the track. i think it comes standard now, however, or in some package, where as I had to drop an additional $1k for it.

as for plastics, not sure where the complaints are coming from. must be from people without the full leather interior, which i guess is possible.
only time i ever hear plastic in my car is from the display on a hot day after its baked in the sun for a few hours. you hear some plastic and it goes away after a few minutes as you cool the interior. truly a great interior if you go full leather.

to the f80/2 owners posting here. Will there ever be software available for rev-matching the 6mt in sport + mode or w/e? It's my understanding that the car is not capable of rev matching via ecu in its most spirited mode which I found super odd. think tuners can tune for that in the future, if so why didn't the bmw engineers do so right out of the gate?

Nice! I'm considering picking up a lightly used '14+ m3 in the near future...love the exterior body lines, but the only thing I am not impressed with is the interior as it seems so dated. Also it needs a better steering wheel, especially after being used to my Fly designs lol

As long as Montreal doesn't have hills, you should be fine. Worst thing is trying to climb a hill with winter tires and RWD, after being stopped. Usually in the morning before the plow comes, been there done that, went back to Audi, likely never do it again.

Thinking about a C63 or M3 for the next car. Will be a daily driver. Was concerned about the performance in the snow, but with good tires and strategic driving, it should be okay. Thinking about a 'cpo' version, but could go new/lease. Guess I need to know how bad do those M/AMG guys rag out their cars? haha.

2016 M3 models have a 65% residual at the moment. You could potentially pick up a lease for < $700/mo. Although the scarce quantities seems to be the limiting factor.

they also have crank hubs that spin, a serious lack of traction and not nearly as nice of an interior as an audi

New M3 is nice. I will be test driving one just for shits and giggles on a weekend I am bored. I smoked one the other day on the highway with my AMG but if it were tuned it would be a different story. I feel that my time to own one is past though. Seems like a young kid car now. I think a 6mt CPO M5 would be a cool candidate but I have to find the wife a new car before even thinking about getting out of mine (I love the AMG though, just miss 6mt)

Good luck with the new ride!

Oh and yes I drive my AMG in the snow. Just get snow tires.

I love how most of the replies have focussed on the 8-12 weeks of snow vs the 40+ dry weeks without snow. I got the sunroof too, was that a waste too since I heard they are calling for rain at some point this year too?

It's all good man. Everyone's got different priorities and are happy to share it (as opinion or as fact). What matters is you enjoy that M3 which you definitely will.

as for plastics, not sure where the complaints are coming from. must be from people without the full leather interior, which i guess is possible.
only time i ever hear plastic in my car is from the display on a hot day after its baked in the sun for a few hours. you hear some plastic and it goes away after a few minutes as you cool the interior. truly a great interior if you go full leather.
I was thinking the same thing. As if the S4 doesn't have any hard plastics lol....The interior of the F80 is nice with or without the full leather.

I've had 3 S4's and we all know how amazing they are in the winter but the M3 is in is in a different class on dry roads and they are both amazing machines and appeal to different buyers. The S4 was a fun car and I'm happy to have been lucky enough to have enjoyed the car while manual was still an option.

Congrats! There is nothing wrong with mixing things up, and the M3 will be fun.

P.S. It is always hilarious how worked up people get when someone jumps to an M3.
