    Glove box noob

I recently bought my first Audi, an '02 B6. Unlike many of its brethren, it has an unbroken glove box - I think. I have two questions:

    1. Is it supposed to just drop open if you open it and don't support it? It does. Or is it supposed to have some sort of damping? It doesn't. My '02 Jetta did.

    2. If it's not supposed to be damped/self-supported, has anyone figured out a way to mod that in so the hinges don't break after my wife opens it carelessly a few times?

    Thanks!

There's a damper. There are also DIYs on this site on how to repair the hinge. The right side hinge has the damper and is the one that is prone to breaking

I read somewhere that the dampener causes that side to break?

Thanks. All the DIYs I found have expired/dead pic links, but I'll get on in there and check it out.

Wow, that dude is off the hizzle. Fortunately, mine just has a dead damper, that'll be an easy fix. While researching the field, I did notice that a bracket to rescue broken hinges, a pre-made version of subversion's fix at the end of that thread, is now available on eBay. Pretty handy.

Be careful of what you buy here. I picked up one of those 'repair kits' and it was for crap. The bracket was all wrong. I ended up doing my own. I kept the bracket too as it wasn't worth the trouble to return it.

I was thinking of reinforcing the tops of the hinges (mine are cracked but not yet failed) with some fiberglass & resin. didn't look at it enough to see how much clearance there is

I took a pass on the kit because I had read that. Went to Home Depot instead an bought some Everbuilt corner brackets (SKU 773 638 - $2.59) and made my own. Bent a couple with a pair of vice grips to match the curve of the hinge. Done. If you are enterprising you can bend all four and sell two on Ebay. Profit!
