.....So I Need to Drop the Front Subframe

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After trying to figure out my clicking sound when accelerating and braking, and turning at slow speeds, I have finally found the culprit. I placed a hydraulic jack under the front subframe and it looks like the crimp has loosened. So it's now time to take it off. I'm going to time this with my control arm replacement, and was wondering, if this engine support bar would be sufficient for keeping the engine in place.

I might be thinking backwards here but the engine is supported by the main frame and tranny. If you support the tranny, I think you should be fine with the subframe out.

Are your referring to the snub mount as the main frame? The manual transmission is supported by a crossmember with a rubber mount through the center of it. I guess it would be risky just having that supporting the engine. I need a engine support bar. Maybe I could get away with one of those cheap chinese ones (the single bar ones with two lift hooks) and just attaching one of the lift hooks to only one of the engine lift points. I know there are two engine lift points, one is a metal bracket near the serp belt tensioner and the other is in the rear by the HPFP. Alot of these engine support bars are meant more for transverse setups. All I'm looking to do is just lift the engine slightly to take off the load on the engine mounts so I can align it when the time comes to reinstall.

Yes, it will be enough to support the engine.

    Did that many time!

Just be sure that it secure and the hooks are on a good attachement point.

This looks crude, but it held the motor when I pulled the tranny on my first B5.
