    Front Crank Seal Leaking

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello everyone!
I need some help. I have a 2008 RS4 (approximately 120K KMs) that has a substantial oil leak. Using a UV dye test it appears to be coming from my front crank seal, behind that accessory pulley (crank damper?). I'll attach photos later when I'm not on mobile.

I'm fairly mechanically inclined and have fairly easy access to the pulley, but I'm not too familiar with the specifics of this engine. Is the pulley pressed on, or can it be slid off after removing the 6 bolts? Does the whole front of the car need to come off? Besides the sockets for the bolts are special tools required? Anyone have access to a factory service manual? I'll I've been able to find is a poorly labelled exploded diagram.

Trying to determine if I should do it myself, or bite the bullet and take it into a shop. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The crank is not pressed on, it is held on with those 6 bolts. If you get it off you should have some pretty good access to the seal in accessory position but Im not sure you will have enough room to do the swap.

Wow thanks! The job itself doesn't sound too bad, but you're right the clearance might be an issue.

If I can get my hands on the specialty tools listed I might take a stab at it myself.

You don't happen to have the torque specs for the vibration damper bolts would you please?

FWIW, I didn't use the special installation tool for the front crank seal, just tapped it in with a block of wood and a rubber mallet.

Oh man I'm way too paranoid for that. That would drive me crazy. I'd rather fork out the $44 to get the seal installed. Plus I'm going to try to do this with as much of the car together as possible, so I won't have room for a block and rubber mallet.
