    Unhappy P1F75 - Gearbox Malfunction

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All!

The dreaded "Gearbox Malfunction, you may continue driving" popped on the dash today while reversing out a spot (car was sitting there for about 4hours). On the way back home, about 5-6 miles in the error went away from the dash. Got home and pulled up the codes and found this: P1F75 - Can't find anything about it on Google/Forums. Car is driving smooth and its hitting all the gears.

    Any ideas? It's a 2011 S4 with ~64K miles

    Thanks!

Carfax said 35k service was done which involves Transmission oil and filter change. I bought the car at 37.5 and nothing since.

You sure it's not P17F5 - Transmission park position interlock solenoid - open circuit?

No :\ Unless Carista is screwing up (Because P1F** codes dont exist apparently?)? Ill try checking with another application or get my hands on a VCDS

What you bring up is interesting though - one thing i'm hypothesizing is that it could be because i shifted into reverse pretty quickly after i started the car and that caused it to throw up the code immediately.

Drove it a couple of times while it was warm yesterday and no error. Today - it showed up again while i was on the Highway (hot engine) and then almost immediately went away.

Update: took it to the dealer the other day. They pulled P179E and are recommending TSB 2032211.(Not sure how/what Carista is pulling up)

TSB PDF: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/...dPdf?id=194325 Pretty involved procedure - involves taking the transmission off.

Repair with labor and parts is in the neighborhood of ~5500.

The code is however not static yet so they cleared it and hoping it doesn't come back. I have driven the car about 100-150 miles since and no beeps yet. Fingers Crossed.

Carista FTL! I can't wait for Audi to get hit with a Class Action for the pos DSG tranny. They have the worse track record with transmissions.

I'd be trading that car in TODAY before the light comes back on. Go to another city if you have to.

Update 2: Ended up selling the car to Carmax earlier this week :\

Definitely don't wanna deal with a big repair on this specially when the solution is not a 100% fix (The TSB lists two possible repairs). Going to put that money toward a newer car instead.

    Thanks for your input everyone!

I have a suspicion that the continuous up/down shifting in auto mode is what eventually wears out the sensor.

I wonder if your issue is related to what my friend went through. See his post below:

The main control unit in the DSG gearbox is called a “mechatronics” unit. It’s a $1500 part that is inside the gearbox surrounded by transmission fluid. VW and Audi filled the transmissions with synthetic oil at the factory but it has been found that the oil reacts (sulphur) inside the transmission and damages the mechatronics control unit. The fix is to drain the gearbox and fill it with mineral transmission oil. However, the VW Group didn’t discover this until recently and have been not willing admit the problem worldwide as 1.6M cars would be affected: http://www.autoblog.com/2013/11/14/v...-light-recall/

So what they did was issue a big recall in 2009 for VW owners. Then in 2012/2013 Audi customers around the world put pressure on Audi and so Audi has selectively begun recalling and replacing the mechatronic units and refilling the transmission with mineral oil. First, it was Malaysia/China then the recall was extended to Australia/New Zealand, then into Europe. Audi has been unwilling to issue a recall in North America — but they know that every transmission with synthetic fluid is going to fail.

Worse yet, most dealers say that the Quattro is a “sealed” unit (no fluid replacement) — yet Audi tells customers that it is CRITICAL that transmission fluid is changed every 40K miles. So its clear that the Audi dealer network isn’t clear about the issue or the fluid change intervals.

    WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
    * Immediately drain your transmission fluid and ensure the tranny is refilled with Audi-approved mineral oil
    * Watch out for warning lights that say your TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) failed and that your Reverse gear no longer works (at which time your forward gears will begin slipping and the car is underivable).

That applies to an entirely different transmission. Also. The GEAR oil is sealed in the transmission. The DSG fluid is serviceable and says to do so in the owners manual.

The mechatronic issue that some DL501s have seems to apply to the first batch of them (Gen 1.)

Most likely why dsg won't be available on the new S4
