Pads and rotors done at ~25,000 miles?

Is it normal for our cars to wear out the brakes this fast? I have yet to track my car and do not drive it hard on the street at all. I'm I unreasonable to be so surprised that taxiing kids back and forth to soccer games would wear them this fast?

I'm right around there and still have plenty of life left in my pads... (8mm IIRC)

Granted, I wish they would go out so I could replace them with less dusty ones.

your brake pad light should come on when its time to replace, IIRC from mine it usually lets you know with about 1k miles of life left... i replaced mine almost a year ago and the car had 54k miles on it. I bought it CPO at around 44k miles and was given all the records and it didn't show that they had ever been done previously

I have heard it from time to time....its funny its so sporadic, I always wonder if its my car or someone elses lol. I'm also really easy on the brakes given 6MT and downshifting and I generally don't drive aggressively at all. Nice to know a light comes on though.

i edited my other post alittle bit but wasn't quick enough LOL . but you shouldn't need brakes for alittle while yet especially if you are easy on them. Mine make a lot of noise in the summer when i have been driving for awhile. Winter is kind of here and there. There are lots of threads on here about it, its just something about audi brakes, my moms allroad she had back in the early 2000s was the same way

I just replaced the OE fronts on my 2011 S4 (with Akebono ceramics and OE/Zimmerman rotors) at 74,000 miles! OK I did push about 3000 miles after the "replace pads" message came up - until I could find the time to do the job - but I watched them very carefully.

Yeah that seems fast. I brought my car into the dealership a few months ago for scheduled maintenance at around 35000 miles, the SA said I had lots of pad and rotor life left.

Seemed pretty damn early to me. Brought car in for 25k service and complained of consistent brake squeal at low speeds once warm. Was told pads and rotors are very thin but can wait for the light to come on before replacing. ($1300 quote) Excuse for them to do nothing about noise? Probably. Of course they couldn't hear either of the rattles from under my car as well even after an over night drive. Not so happy today but first world problems. If I have to replace rotors I need to decide between JHM, Girodisc or Apilkol.

This doesn't add up. Changed my fronts at 60k and they still could have gone further, light had not come on yet. Do you drive in a lot of bumper to bumper traffic? Are you a tailgater?

Rears done at about 27k and went with the Stasis rotor and pads because annoyed by Audi disposable rotors. That's with two track days, that I know of because CPO. Fronts at about 35k and went BBK. They made it through four track days (same assumption) before the upgrade.

I'm at 29K and was down to 4mm in the rear and 7mm in the front, so I decided to replace them all around. The stock pads and rotors suck for all the SoCal stop and go traffic, gave off a lot of dust too. Switched to aftermarket and no more dust, love it!

I have a relatively short 20 minute commute for So Cal. I don't consider myself a tailgater but that's relative. I have had too many new cars in my wife's opinion and none of them have come close to blowing through rotors and pads in 25k miles and that includes vehicles that went on track days. Previous A4's (B5) I owned saw multiple track days on the stock pads without needing service this early. I will have to get down there with calipers myself and double check. At this point I'm not sure what I'm more disenchanted with: The dealer service or Audi at this point.

My brake light came on at 29k miles. Shocked bc car has never been tracked and isn't driven that hard. Not a tailgater either. Called local Audi Indy mechanic and he insisted that the rotors must be replaced as well. Can anyone confirm this is accurate/typical?

From my experience Audi will normally require that the rotors be replaced.

IMO you are better off buying an aftermarket set of rotors and pads. Cheaper and better performance.

audi very kindly replaced my pads on them at 12k due to a wicked squeal but left the rotors alone, they told me my pads had just over 50% remaining 0o but i drive uhh pretty spiritedly so i wasn't that shocked. It's the stupid brake dust that's going to be the death of me, i'm definitely going w/ aftermarket pads next time. Thing is, i don't think german pads are any better than Japanese or other manufactures that don't have the heavy dusting compound or whatever it is but who knows as they still insist on using them (i guess for autobahn purposes).

I ran my car through the car wash before heading home.

When I parked and stepped out this is what I was greeted by.

    Can't wait to replace them.

I go through brakes like some people use gas. Mine were done around that same time period. But I've been hard on brakes my whole life. I did something (too long ago to remember what - approaching 25 years) to the brakes in my first car and it was memorable just because it was something the dealership had never seen go bad before (warped drum or something attributed to my driving stylings). I don't ride my brakes but when I stop, I stop. I'm probably a real joy to ride with.

Audi dealership told me I needed new fronts a year ago - but I'd already had issues with them so waited to get a second opinion. My 2012 is at 50k miles and I haven't needed to change the brakes yet. First four years with the car was spent driving up and down windy mountains in Italy... unless there was a mechanical problem or you ride your brake, you shouldn't need to replace the pads yet.

My wife's pad warning light literally came on a few miles from the dealership when we went in for the 25K. She rode it out a little longer and got every last drop out of the fronts. We replaced the pads with OEM but got lightweight Girodisc rotors.

So far the rears are holding up at 32k (CROSSING FINGERS)

She's due for her 3rd set of tires at this point due to front camber, the rest still aren't to the wear bars yet.

She tracked it when it was almost used and drives it like the good Lord intended.

Sound very similar to what my pads where like when my ODO was around there. Seems fairly common unless huge amounts of highway miles are traveled.

I would think pads that have an initial bite like the OEM ones do are not expected to last the same as an economy car...

I just had my car in for it's "25K" service (I used the ""'s as I am sitting at 16.1k miles and it's a 2014). I had the service due to timing and not mileage.

The Audi Tech told me that my front pads are a little thin and I should consider replacing... I am super skeptical as I have had the car from 2.5k miles (CPO) and never raced or tracked the car at all. Also zero noises or brake lights on the dash. I would expect more miles on the factory pads/rotors. As for 25k miles... I would still expect a little more life.

I read somewhere that dsg and sport diff will apply inside brakes on turns. Maybe this is a factor? Do you do laps on rotaries?

The Audi Tech told me that my front pads are a little thin and I should consider replacing... I am super skeptical as I have had the car from 2.5k miles (CPO) and never raced or tracked the car at all. Also zero noises or brake lights on the dash. I would expect more miles on the factory pads/rotors. As for 25k miles... I would still expect a little more life.
Audi dealers are notorious for pushing early brake replacement. The best is when they justify their ridiculous cost by telling customers that the S4 has Brembo brakes!

That is very true. I was shocked how soon they were pushing replacing on me and there was a lot of material left.

Just replaced F&R brakes (all rotors and pads) at 19000 miles. Didn't get the brake light warning but front and rear rotors were warped pretty bad. Dealer wanted $980 for fronts and $900 for rears. Went to an indy shop with my parts. Total damage under $800.
