    Reasonable mechanics/shops in Portland area...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know there are quite a few decent shops in the Portland area, but was hoping someone knows of a hidden gem or knows of a competent private mechanic that is more reasonable than $105-140 an hour... What you guys have? Thanks in advance!

BTW, I'm down in Sherwood but willing to travel up to Hillsboro, downtown, east side, etc no problem for the right place.

    What do you need done?

Most people use Futrell or Matrix but as you said they are a bit $$$$$.

Right, I use Hillside Imports, and they are good, but just looking for a guy/place that is more reasonable that $105/hr that I can establish a relationship with... I have a strange front end rattle right now, just got the car a month ago and will be doing repairs and upgrades on an ongoing basis.

I think matrix and futrell are both 105, I could be wrong about futrell. DJM is 103 but they are in deep NE.

Thats about what you're going to be paying anywhere.

Save yourself some money and DIY it?

Ya, I do have a single car narrow garage I could manage to do *some* things myself and my friend is an old DSM guy with a lot of experience with 2.0 Turbo's, albeit old tech but I'm sure he can help me install my eBay FMIC as he has his own house and tools etc. :)
So, I might as well continue to go to Hillside since they let me source my own parts, so I can at least do my research and save money there.

If anyone else has any ideas, let me know...

I'm sure some of the local members will let you use their garage for some beer

I just moved and haven't finished unpacking or I would offer to help out.

Thanks anyway man, nothing is super pressing at the moment anyway, I'll just have Hillside do my lower right control arms and go from there.

$100 -$105/hour is pretty standard for the Portland metro area. The performance shop I use for my Mustang charges $105/hour. I've had work done on my s5 at DJM they've never charged me by the hour so to speak. They charge a lump sum, I.E. $375 in labor for a pulley change and ECU flash. Great shop totally worth the money, but as someone stated they are located by the airport. You also have to buy the parts through them, which does add to the overall cost.

You know, I may just use a generic "full service shop" for more of the basic things, a brake shop said they'd work on my car for only like $65/hr, I guess it depends if I trust them or not, their parts quote was completely retarded though too... I miss my super honest and cool backyard mechanic who charged me $50/hr and by backyard I mean he had a shop with a lift and everything... sigh...

    I wouldn't...

What basic things though? If anything, DIY the basics and pay a reputable shop to do the harder stuff with OE parts. If you're not confident on the DIY stuff, lots of people on here would gladly help, including me.

I'm talking like control arms I need to be replaced that a full service shop can do... Simple things like diverter valve I'll do.

You had a mechanic for $50/hr, that's what I call "the hook up", I wouldn't hold your breath on finding that again. Sounds like a ton of super cool ppl willing to help you out in the PDX.
