    My First Car - 2007 A4 2.0T

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been looking for my first car for quite sometime now. I first started looking at the B7 Avants and did so much research prying myself over this car. Saved every last penny for the last 2 years. Then the idea slowly died about me owning an Audi and started to think more towards Subaru or Tacoma. Then this labor day me and my dad went to a used car lot that had a couple of Subarus that apparently sold the day before. That was fine with me, I already scheduled to meet with a Tacoma on craigslist. As we were walking out I look to my right and see an Avant within my price range, 135,000 miles and the best part was when I looked inside and saw the stick shift. If you own a Tacoma and were suppose to have someone take a look at it Monday, I'm sorry. I bought an Avant.

One last thing, the 20 inch rims with summer tires on it probably won't do me too good in the winter time. Where do you source your tires and wheels? Just need some cheap factory wheels and nice winter tires. I don't want to die in the mountains.

If you see a blue Avant stalling somewhere in the mountains, Its probably me.

Nice find! I agree, do some good preventative maintenence now before you find out wasn't performed before:

    0. Scan for any codes.
    1. Change oil with proper spec oil, many choices, I prefer Motul Xcess 5w-40 / Mann filters - why? I trust used car lots / salesmen less than politicians....
    2. Check / change cam follower
    3. Change spark plugs - plenty of information, dont worry about performance coppers unless you are tuned, stick with fresh platinums for longevity
    4. Check for oil leaks. Valve cover, rear cam chain cover, vacuum pump, oil filter housing, oil cooler are all somewhat common places to leak
    5. Timing belt should be at 105k miles, unless you know it was done, you should do it for piece of mind. Great DIY by phil, follow it.

That should be a good start and get you started in learning this platform.

    Hey!

Camara whore it! Show us your beauty inside and out! Hope you enjoy it! For a first car, this will be super fun and a wonderful learning experience. I have owned a 3 s13 Nissan 240sx (Drove two as daily drivers, one was just for parts) and a 2005 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, those cars thought me regular and normal Mechanics stuff. Owned my B7 for two months now and ive learned a whole different animal.

Not to scare you but these cars are super anal when it comes to parts. Most things I try to buy straight from Audi, Especially sensors and relays and stuff like that. Only thing I havent got from Audi is my Battery and Alternator, I am regretting the Alternator part. But you will definitely learn a lot starting with this car!

With all that being said, good luck! Definitely do what rongeur suggested. I think I am going to do that myself. Great information.

Now go out there and enjoy!

really good find. For some reason i like those wheels lol and i'm a strictly a OEM guy lol. take some inside pics!. Get the factory manual from ebay and a Vagcom. The Vagcom is expensive but super worth it. Like everyone else do preventative maintenance. ALSO so with the Factory (DEALER) parts when it comes to electronics.

Wow thank you, I really appreciate your advice since I'll be taking it in this week to make sure everything is sound. The mechanic owns an allroad so I hope he is very familiar until I learn.

ooooooo 240sx.... I had no idea they made a sentra Spec V, must have been something else!

I'm already pretty scared and don't know what to expect.. I appreciate it! It's good to know this, I want to be sure if anything were to go wrong the replacement won't mess anything else up. I came prepared for the Audi parts, I still have a little bit over a thousand left over for anything that comes up.

These mountain roads have never been so fun... I might have already put 150 miles on it in one day...

Baby steps. I bought mine in 2011 CPO. I started with oil changes and diverter valve. That led to cam follower, PCV delete, intake mods, suspension, timing belt, brakes ect. Gaining confidence and knowledge about this platform along the way, I was able to assemble the motor around a built block, pull and re-install the motor without issue major issue.

All of the information was from here and a few of the audi forums for some good DIY material. Disclaimer is that it get addicting, very addicting. The car is an amazing source of pride of what I have been able to accomplish on my own. Most people lay public don't even know how to check tire pressure...

The Spec V didnt come with much over the SE-R. Sporty seats (Not even recaros... what a shame but they were R33 skyline inspired so they say), 6 speed manual and TSW made Wheels. I would still be driving it if it wasnt for me getting rear ended.

My 3rd 240 was my love. She got totalled too. Someone side swipped it and hit my rear quarter panel and totalled the car. Yeah, i no luck with cars i like which makes me scared for my b7. I love the car. 2 months in and im over 1.5k miles driven lol. Shes stockish, APR tune stage one (go to their website more then enough power and i like the reliablity and switching of modes when i want, i lend my car to family so they dont need 293 w-torque lol) and exhaust. *knocks on wood*

You have a good list above . I would definitely do that. Especially Cam follower. Make sure its still there and no holes. Kinda a tough to get to but it seems doable. I would definitely hold that cash for just in case money. from my experience, guys on forums are super helpful. So far im loving the AZ community.

Honestly for your first car, i think you did well. Just dont go crazy on mods. I cant be fancy and buy all the mods i want so im keeping it simple. I feel stage 1 tune is more than enough and i seen the numbers and it seems to be reliable and safe. but thats just me. Take your time and read some of the "I need help threads (the ones people asking for help) threads so you can more or less understand how some parts work and weird things Audi does. Something i learned was that these cars have two fuel pressure regulators. one high pressure and one low. relays under ECU tend to go bad. The Cam follower and risk if that breaks and falls. Dont be panic if you read something that you arent sure is done. The list above covers a lot. Also something that wasnt mention was the Diverter valve. Depending on the revision you have, it might go bad. so if you ever feel like the turbo isnt building enough boost. that might be your issues. Again. Just go and read threads. Theres a lot of good information and a lot of bad. but just get an idea of what is going under your hood. After that, enjoy your car.

Sorry, i went into big brother mode. Anywho. Feel free to PM me if anything. im not expert but ill help you out finding answers if need be. Oh, definitely get a VAGCOM. I feel its a purchase that you can always get some/most of your money back. Keep an eye out on the classified for a used one. 300 bucks is what i paid for mine. im confident i can get close to that number if i want to sell it right now.

For winter wheels, check craigslist for stock wheels or get a set of Alzor replicas ($400-$600/set for 17") and some good snow tires. I've got experience with Blizzak and General Altimax Arctic and they are both great tires.

I got some OEM wheels with tires that you might want for the winter. They're 18" and came off my last b5 a4. I have the spare wheel as well. They're scratched from previous owner but what I did was I plasti dip them and they don't look scratched. Hit me up for more details. I can send you pics.
