    Rear injector not seating properly.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just replaced my injector cups, injector o rings, and had to replace an injector. Finally got everything re installed and finished up. And when I started it up it seemed to run weird, I just figured the fuel system needed to prime, but then I just start hearing pops. I look and my rear injector has flames coming up around it, tried putting a different injector in, and it's the same story, tried new o rings, same story. What are you guys thinking? Maybe a faulty cup?

did you remove the manifold before you replaced the injector cups??? it's possible that pieces of the old injector cups fell into the chambers...when i replaced mine they literally crumbled to pieces...there is no way in hell i could have done the job without removing the manifold...

Yep, I removed the mani so I could repaint it. I also blew out the ports with an air gun just to be sure.

check the fuel harness wiring, it's possible that the wires cracked over the years after going through hundreds of heat cycles...mine are definitely cracked and i need to splice in a new harness at some point...

They are definitely cracked. But I don't think that has anything to do with flames coming up around my injectors.

hmmm, i'm not sure if a short in the harness can cause flames like that...

I've definitely got a harsh misfire also. This was not happening before I tore down for the injector o ring and cup service. Any ideas what that might be? It literally causes my car to stall, but if it rev above 2k, smooths right out.

did you put sealant on the new injector cups?

the billet set i used came with injector cup sealant...are the injectors you're using stock ones?

I ended up using Teflon tape, I had read in a thread that this works well.

I ended up getting 8 new seals from autozone, and soaked them in oil for an hour. Re installed them on the injectors and now, luckily no more flames. But we are still misfiring very badly. I vagged it and it's multiple random misfires, and also brake booster vacuum signal issue. So definitely a BAD vacuum leak. I pulled the oil cap to see if it was sucking it down, it is not but my oil smells putrid, and I'm thinking I could potentially need a breather hose kit.

Just sitting here think about it, and wondering if it could be a bad MAF? Because when a MAF is bad it causes it to run extremely rich, which could account for the flames coming out of the injectors? I don't know just something I thought about

i powder coated it gunmetal while i had the manifold off when i was running kynar check valves, silicone lines and 034 hoses.

the billet injectors are from phenixengineering...i never want to deal with leaky injector cups again...

OP, inspect all of your vacuum lines and check valves...it's possible that you cracked one while taking the manifold off and it is a tangled mess of hoses in that area...when i changed out my breather hose it crumbled to pieces and i had to buy a long pair of pliers to fish pieces out of the motor...i also reinstalled my manifold with a new gasket since i was still rolling around with the one from the factory...not sure if a new gasket would make a difference...

You should run a compression test on cylinder #4. The only thing that I can think of that would cause misfires and fuel ignition in the intake manifold would be a cracked / damaged intake valve.

Another quick easy way to check would be to put the engine at TDC using the cam/crank marks and then use an air nozzle to pressurize cylinder #4. If you hear air escaping into the intake manifold it pretty much confirms a bad valve.

There is one thing that I can't quite figure out. Car was running fine, realized my leaky injectors were getting worse, decided to replace o rings and seats, now it's misfiring.

are you sure your motor was set to TDC when you started taking everything off? i was ultra paranoid that debris and dirt would fall into the cylinders through the valves so i made sure that i set the motor to TDC and blew the shit out of that area with a can of compressed air before taking everything apart...as soon as i removed the manifold i blew out each of the valve intakes with compressed air and plugged the intakes with paper towels...i blew the intakes out again for good measure before i put everything back together...

I didn't set it to tdc. Today I came home for lunch to check it out with some fresh eyes, and now it's cylinder 3 with the flames. So it keeps jumping around.

    Rear injector not seating properly.

Hahaha. You gotta spill it man!! I swear we won't be too harsh on you! Maybe...

We've all done it though. When I replaced my pcv and injector cups and everything a few years back, it was the first major project I'd ever done on a car. Finally got it buttoned up and went to start it and the car BARELY ran. Like it was dying and sputtering and making awful noises. I was mortified and thought I broke my car. Went back inside to collect myself and talk myself off he ledge. Went back out 30 minutes later and poked around. I'd left the brake booster hose disconnected and there was a massive vacuum leak. Connected t back up and everything was fine. Was a major derp moment.

Well that is still unknown, but first off. I never tightened down the sensor on the throttle body, there was a n249 hose that never got hooked up, forgot to plug in the n75 sensor, and forgot a hose on the intake manifold. Sharing is always good. Now if someone else has the same mistake, they will know to check all those lines! Thats the point of forums! You gotta share your experiences to help the larger community. I bet you'll stop working on the car when your tired. I've made too many stupid mistakes when I try to push myself too long. Its better to take a nap and come back than to try to finish things in a hurry, as you learned.

Yeah. The thing is I am fairly good at automotive, but my car was sitting for awhile waiting on injector cups. So I forgot about everything I disconnected.

Dude carpart.com is sick! I'll have to check those out, I've been to euros only and they are cool. But last time I was in there he said he didn't have any 6 speeds.

Well that wasn't so bad;) It's easy to forget to hook stuff back up when it's been apart for a while. I'm still scratching my head as to how any of those conditions could cause the intake manifold to flash. Glad to hear that you got it back running properly
