    DIY: Ignition controlled auto-folding mirrors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Parts needed:

2 DEI 528T relay/timers (I got mine from ebay for $8 each with free shipping)
Spare wire (I bought 1 blue and 1 white roll of 20ft 18 gauge from local parts store and had plenty left over)
Wire taps/barrel connectors, and a crimping tool
    Electrical tape
    Zip ties

DISCLAIMER: With this mod you will lose the ability to fold your mirrors in with the switch. I've never had the need to fold the mirrors in with the switch while the car was running so I had no problem losing the control. I'm still communicating with a few guys over at the12volt.com and may update this DIY with the ability to keep the switch control with the ignition controlled autofold.

First you need to remove the lower part of the dash below the steering column. Then you should remove the driver and passenger door panels. Also remove the driver and passenger kick panels (the panel next to the dead pedal on drivers side and opposite on the passengers side). Remove both door speakers too. Once the door panels are removed you will see a control module next to the power window motor in each door. You want the blue and pink wires from the tan plug in these modules,

The blue wire opens the mirror and the pink wire closes it. Cut both the pink and blue wires. Once cut you should use electrical tape to cover the wires that go towards the tan plug. Strip the blue and pink wires that go into the door to prepare for connection to the two wires you are going to run through the door. In the door jam you need to remove the rubber wire covers from the grommets. On the drivers side door, the car side has tabs that you push and it will release. The door side you reach into the door in the speaker hole and push it out. You will have to poke a hole into the rubber drivers side grommet (from inside the grommet, you will see what I am talking about when you remove it.) The easiest way for me to run the 2 wires was to poke a hole in the door side grommet and fish my wire through the rubber door jam cover. There is just enough room to run the two wires below the car side plastic wire connector to get them into the car:

Make sure when you run the wire inside the door you keep it down low and zip tie it to the existing wires that run below the speaker so it won't get caught up in the window. Run the wire to the same hole that your blue and pink mirror motor wires come out of:

Connect your two wires you just ran into the door to the blue and pink wires you prepared earlier. Repeat the same steps to connect to the same blue and pink wires from the tan connector in the passenger side door. Once my 4 wires (2 to each door) were run into the driver and passenger side doors I ran them up to the area above the fuse panel which was a perfect mounting spot for my 528t's and connected the 2 blue wires together and the 2 white wires together:

Now it's time to prepare your 528t's for install. I like to use black electrical tape to keep my wiring clean. I used zip ties to connect my 2 528t's together. I then taped my 2 red wires (12V) together. Use t-taps and connect the 2 brown wires to the red power wires you just taped together. Then tape your two black wires (ground) together. Use t-taps and connect the 2 orange wires to the black wires you just taped together. Then tape your two black/white stripe wires (trigger) together. Then tape your 2 yellow wires (trigger output) together. On the 528t's you will see a blue looped wire that comes out of the 528t and goes back into it. You need to cut that looped wire on 1 of the 528t's. The 528t that you cut the blue looped wire you will connect the yellow (trigger output) wire to the 2 blue wires you ran into the doors. Then connect the yellow wire on the 528t that has the uncut blue looped wire to the white wires you ran into the doors. Once this was done I then put my 528t's into the spot above the fuse panel where they will sit and work for the rest of their life!

Next, run the two red wires from the 528t's down to the power source just above the dead pedal and connect them to the bottom 12V power source:

Then run your 2 black wires from the 528t's down to the ground source that sits just to the left of the power source behind the kick panel:

Then run your 2 black/white stripe wires to the ignition wires located in the bundle of wires that comes from the steering column. You need to use 2 t-taps and tap into the thick black wire and the yellow/black stripe wire. Connect the black/white stripe (trigger) wire from the 528t with the cut blue loop to the thick black wire. Connect the black/white stripe (trigger) wire from the 528t that does not have the cut blue loop to the yellow/black stripe wire.

Now it's time to set the timers on your 528t's. This setup has a 2-3 second delay on the close function in case you need to look at the driver's mirror before getting out in traffic. Because of this you will need to set the close timer to 3 seconds longer than the open timer. For me, I set the timer on the 528t that is connected to the open (blue) wire to 9 o'clock. I then set the timer on the 528t that is connected to the close (white) wire to 2 lines past 9 o'clock (you will see what I am talking about when you are looking at the dial on the 528t).

Time to test out your sweet new mod! If for some reason the mirrors are closing during ignition on and opening during ignition off just switch the two black/white stripe wires you hooked up the the 2 ignition wires.

Any questions feel free to ask

Nice! I'm going to save this one for January when there's nothing to do.

    Very Nice.

I fold my mirrors in when going through a drive-through car wash. (if you were looking for an example of when one might want to fold in while driving)

Did you really use a drive through car wash?

I didn't want to say anything, but my dad would come right out of his grave if I ever took my car to an automatic car wash. And rightly so.

In NY/NJ area (at least North NJ), our only options are hand washing, or drive through (you do not drive through, the shop guys do). Hand washing will do NOTHING to remove the winter road salt. So, take your pick, hand washing leaving the entire undercarriage untouched, or car washes.

After trying this once, I leave them out so the window and the mirror itself isn't blocked from being cleaned... Not sure why no one has said this yet, but I thought the whole point of the folding mirrors was for tight parking spaces.. I know my single car garage is pretty narrow, so I fold them in while pulling into the garage so this mod would defeat the one good reason to even have them.

I know for a fact that there are some very decent auto washes out there, you just can't go any old regular gas station one though, it just takes a little research... Now I like to hand wax my car once in awhile, but in today's world not everyone has the luxury of washing their cars by hand.

I am in fear of them braking off in the car wash. I do have problems where I have to yell at them to not manually fold out the mirror.

I thought it was more for parking on the street... Fold them in so cars do not rip them off. But a narrow mouth garage would make folding mirrors very useful!

You have to research your car washes, if you are going to use an automatic one, look for ones with good reviews on Google, Yelp, etc. Ones that do a poor job or break off people's equipment/mirrors will be pretty clearly posted. If you think folding them in helps protect them, that's fine, just carry a towel in the trunk so you can unfold and finish them by hand as I've noticed the mirror itself and window area where they fold in don't get cleaned well.. And wow, really? You have to tell them not to unfold your mirrors by hand? I'd just do the folding thing right in front of them when pulling up and if they have guys hand drying at the end, unfold right as you are emerging... if it's a get out and wait type place, I wouldn't even risk folding them at all, again, good car washes won't damage your mirrors. :)

But ya, they totally come in handy for tight parking spaces, either out in public or for peace of mind pulling into a tight garage... So this mod isn't for me as it would defeat the main purpose of folding them in while still pulling into a tight spot, but very ingenious idea and execution by the OP!
